ETHICAL ISSUE:
EXPLOITATION
Narrative
Although I have not encountered any ethical issues during my Cap Stone project, part of my
experience in the human services field includes about three years that I have spent in Bancrofts
Quality Management department. My role in this department was to conduct investigations into
allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Although, sadly, I have investigated allegations of
incidents that might make even the most experienced professionals skin crawl, the common
ethical issue that I would see come up is that of financial exploitation and the blurring of
professional boundaries. Perhaps the most common allegation of exploitation would generally be
a scenario in which a staf member borrows money or an individuals personal belongings, such
as a DVD, for their personal use. While in most of these cases, the staf has every intention of
repaying the money or returning the item, this, by both Bancrofts and the Department of
Developmental Disabilities definitions is exploitation. In the staf/client relationship, the staf
holds a position of power over the client. This influence, coupled with knowing a client for an
extended period of time, creates a blurred line of professionalism. Borrowing money or an item
from a client is an abuse of this power that a staf has, in that, they are responsible for a number
of the clients areas of their life. If the client were to refuse to lend money or an item, the client
could then be put into a position in which they could be victims of retaliation at the hands of the
staf member. In my role, I gathered evidence and statements from all involved. Once I make a
determination on an outcome, likely, the staf member would be, terminated for their breech of
the professional boundary that is so important when working with a vulnerable population.
