Many Americans believed that the US should stay
out of World War because it was viewed as a
European conflict, not a US conflict
Isolate or neutral= to stay away; to not join; to
avoid

Alliances- many countries in Europe has several alliances had I
got your back, you got my back deals
Imperialism- a large amount of competition for gaining new land
and resources built tension in Europe
Militarism- countries had been building up militaries and
weapons/supplies up for some time!! (an arms race building
military)
Nationalism- having strong passion/pride for your country and
disregard other countries/peoples
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand- immediate cause
of WWI

1. The sinking of Lusitania
A British cruise liner/passenger ship, the worlds largest
passenger ship at the time
A German submarine (U-Boat) sunk the ship, killing over
1,100 people including over 120 Americans)
2. The Zimmerman Telegram
The British intercepted a secret message being sent from
Germany to Mexico
Message told Mexico that if they joined Central Powers and
attacked America up north, Germany would support their
soldiers with troops and financial (money) support
In return, Mexico would receive parts of Texas, Arizona, and
New Mexico back

EFFECTS OF WWI
Allied Powers defeated the Central Powers
Millions were killed (approximately 37 million causalities!!!)
Germany was forced to sign Treaty of Versailles
Ended WWI
Germany had to take full responsibility for the war
Germany was required to pay large amounts of money (war reparations) to help
other countries repair/rebuild due to destruction from WWI
Germany was to pay $33 BILLION in war reparations (IMPOSSIBLE)

Germany lost territories

Treaty of Versailles is thought to have sparked WWII years later
