Observation

Instructional Lesson
Classroom:
Grade: First Grade
Curriculum Area: Science (Soil)
What I notice
-The teacher would start each lesson
by reviewing what the students
learned the day before.

-Students are very engaged and

enthused about the science lesson.

-Teacher has example of everything

the students are talking about (i.e.
clay, sand, soil.)

-The teacher and student talk about

whether or not they think clay, sand,
or soil will soak up the most water.

Thoughts, Questions, Connections to
Methods Classes
-I thought this was a great way to
build prior knowledge and also
students who werent there the day
before to catch up.
-Even though science is right after
lunch and recess they are extremely
focused, and tuned into the science
lesson.
-Are these items given to teachers
or do they have to buy them
themselves?
If the school doesnt provide the
items how would the teacher
perform this lesson without the
physical visuals?

-Technology was incorporated into

this section by using the smart
board to write what they students
-Bar graphs were made to determine feel will happen.
who voted for the sand, soil, or clay.
-In science method class we talked
about using science to make other
connections. In this portion of the
lesson the teacher included math.

My teacher did a great job of showing me exactly what a science

lesson should look like. I believe that everything I have learned in my
science method block was shown in class. I was especially surprised
when I seen that a math connection was made because I really
remember us heavily talking about trying to incorporate other subjects
into our lessons so I thought that was pretty great. I also noticed that
students were more of the teacher when it came to science. My
teacher asked a lot of questions and allowed the students to guide
their own learning. Of course with them being in first grade they kind
of got off focus every once in awhile but my cooperating teacher did a
amazing job with railing them back in. Overall my science observation
went well and I was glad to actually see everything work together and
fit in real life. My teacher brought everything we learned in class to life.
