Angles of Depression and Angles of Elevation

You are ying a kite that has a string length of 200 feet. You
measure its angle of elevation to be 58o. How high is the kite?

Standing atop a lighthouse that is 300 feet above sea level, you spy
two boats at sea that are directly east of you. The angle of
depression to the closer boat is 35o and the angle of depression to
the farther boat is 31o. How far apart are the boats?

We can use inverse trig functions to nd the missing angles of

right triangles.

To comply with government regulations, a wheelchair ramp must

rise 8 feet for every 20 feet in length. What is the angle of elevation
at which the ramp needs to be built?

A plane leaves OHare and travels 500 miles southeast before

turning 90o. The plane travels another 750 miles before receiving an
emergency transmission requiring the plane to travel back to
OHare. How many degrees must the plane turn?
