Alotofcomputerandsoftwarerelatedgigsgetlumpedintothesamebundleofcareers,withnoreal
differentiation.Thereality,though,isthatthereareanumberofvocationsthatincludeprogramming,
development,computersecurity,etc.Lastyear,wecoveredtheinsandoutsofbeinganITprofessional.
Today,werelookingattheworldofappdevelopers.WetalkedwithJasonButz,whogivesusapeek

IwasbornandgrewupinIndianapolis,Indiana.Im26,butapproaching27quickly.ImanApplication
Developer,whichisafancywayofsayingIbuildwebapplications.Ivebeenwithmycurrentemployer
foralmost2years,butIhavebeenprofessionallyworkingonwebapplicationsforabout5years.Ive
beenplayingwithwebsitesandwebtechnologyinmyfreetimeformorethan15years.
2.Whydidyouwanttogetintoapplicationprogramming/development?Wasitsomethingyou
alwaysknewyouwantedtodo?
GrowingupIwantedtobeavetorazookeeper,sothiswasntexactlywhatIoriginallywanted.In
middleschoolItookasummerenrichmentclasswhereIlearnedtobuildwebsites.Itwasstillthe90s,
andthewebsiteswerentgoodlooking,butIwashooked.InhighschoolItookeverycomputerclassI
couldandwaslearningmoreaboutwebdevelopmentathomeonmyowntime.Iwastakingclasseson
everythingfromprogrammingtobuildingandfixingcomputers.Iwasactuallyabletogetacouple
certifications.IwasntsureexactlywhatIwantedtodo,butIknewitwoulddealwithcomputers.OnceI
startedmycollegesearchIzeroedinonaComputerSciencedegreeandfiguredoutincollegethatIwas
goodatwebapplicationsandlovedbuildingthem.
3.Canyoudefineforuswhatanapplicationdeveloperdoes?Ittendstogetlumpedinwitha
varietyofothertechcareers.Whatisitthatdefinesyourspecificrole?
Withthetitlescompaniesusethingsdogetverymurky.Forexample,atthecompanywhereIwork,an
ApplicationDevelopercangetapromotiontoaSoftwareEngineer,wheretheonlyrealdifferenceisthe
payscaleavailable.IhadapreviousjobwhereIdidthesamething,butmytitlewasDeveloper/Analyst.
Iamsurethereareevenmoretitlesusedthanthose,butIdontknowthemall.Itgetsevenmore
complicatedwhenyoutakeintoaccountthatthetitleofSoftwareEngineerisusedforjobsthatdont
necessarilyworkwithwebapplications,butjustdosomesortofprogramming.
Inmycase,anApplicationDeveloperbuildsandmaintainswebapplications.InthedepartmentIamin
wehave34primaryinternalwebapplicationsthatwehavebuiltandmaintain.Inanotherdepartmentthe
ApplicationDevelopersbuildcustomwebapplicationstoextendtheproductandservicesthatcustomers
havepurchased.
Forexample,oneofourinternalapplicationsisaprojectmanagementsuitebuiltaroundourprocesses
andneeds.AfewofthedevelopersonmyteamjustfinisheddeployingamassiveoverhaultoourGantt
chartfeature.Imworkingmywaythroughunderstandingandbuildingoutacomplexfinancialreport
thatneedstobebuiltentirelywithinformationwehaveinoursystem.Weallworkonthesametools,but

certificationsrequired?Ifyoudogotocollege,whatshouldyoustudy?
Acollegedegreeisntnecessarilyrequired,buttherearealotofcompaniesthatwontevenconsideryou
forapositionunlessyouhaveone.Withoutadegreeyouwillneedtohaveagoodportfolioofworkand
projectsyouhavebuilt.Ifyouhavemadegoodcontributionstopopularopensourceprojects,thatwould
beespeciallyhelpful(ofcourse,agoodportfolioisgoingtobehelpfulevenwithacollegedegree).
TherearenttoomanycertificationsthatIamawareofifyouwanttodoanysortofwebdevelopment,
thoughIamsuresomeexist.Certificationscanbehelpfulwithanytechnologyjob,butemployersseem
tobegettingmoreleeryofpotentialemployeeswhohaveaslewofcertificationsbutnorealexperience
tobackthemup.Itisntunheardofforpeopletocramforcertificationtestsandpassbutstillhavenoreal
understandingoftheinformation.
Thereareseveralpathsyoucantakeforacollegedegree.IwenttheComputerScience(CS)route.There
aresomepeopleonmyteamwhohaveInformationScience(IS)orComputerandInformationScience
(CIS)degrees.IveevenworkedwithonepersonwhohadaComputerGraphicsdegree.CSdegreestend
tohavemorecomputertheorythanISorCIS.IthinkIhavealsoseensomecollegesofferWeb
Developmentdegrees,whichcouldevenwork.Itreallycomesdowntowhattheindividualdegree
programteachesandwhatexactlyyouwanttodo.
5.Howdoyoufindworkasanapplicationdeveloper?Aretheredifferenttypesofjobswithinthe
field?Whatsthejobmarketlike?
Thebestway,whichIactuallyhadsometroublewith,infindingworkasanapplicationdeveloperisto
startwithaninternship.Mycollegedidntputmuchemphasisonthem,whichreallyworkedagainstme.
Wehadafewinternsonmyteamlastsummeroneofthemdidsuchagoodjobthathehasbeenallbut
toldhewillbehiredwhenhegraduatesifheapplies.
Therearealsoalotofrecruitersforalltechnicaljobs.InIndianapolisthereisactuallyashortageof
technicalpeople,sotherecruitersareworkingreallyhard.Theycanbeagreatwaytogetinterviewsand
findwork,butyouhavetorememberthisistheirjob.Theyhaveaninterestingettingyouhired
somewhere,evenifitisntthebestfitforyou.
Ihavehadthemostluckwithreferralsfromfamilyandfriends.Igotmyfirstjoboutofcollegethanksto
aguyIknewwhohadgraduatedtheyearbeforeme.Wehadntreallybeenfriendsatthetime,buthe
knewtheclassesIhadbeentakingandheknewhecouldvouchformyskillsbythesimplefactIwas
gettingadegreefromthesameprogramhedid.WhileinschoolIcantemphasizeenoughthatyouneed
tonetworkwithyourprofessors,thealumni,andevenpeopleayearortwoaheadofyou.Theycouldbe
thekeytoyoufindingthatdreamjob.Iactuallygotmyfootinthedooratmycurrentemployerthanksto
myhalfsiblingscousin.Soundskindofcrazyandalwaysgetsalaugh,butIwilltakewhateverIcan
get.
Thereisalsothegoodoldmethodofsendingoutresumes.Iwouldsuggestnotusingthejobfindingsites,
likeCareerBuilder,ifyoucanhelpitjustsendyourresumetothecompanythroughtheirowncareers
section.Lookupcompaniesinyourareaandtakealookatwhattheydoandwhatjobstheyhave
available.Ifyouhaveaquestionaboutwhetherornottheyevenhavecertaintypesofjobs,donthesitate
tocallthemandasktospeakwithanHRrecruiter.Youneverknow,youmaygetluckyandgetan

startthedaybyskimmingmyemailandthehelpdesklookingforanyissuesthatIcantakecareofor
needtoprovideanupdateon.AfterthatIpickupwhateverIwasdoingthepreviousdayanddomybest
tofocusonthatuntilourSCRUMmeetingat9:30.OurSCRUMmeetingsareashortmeetingwherewe
saywhatwehavebeenworkingonandwhatweplantodoforthatday.Itsalsothetimewhenourboss
mightswitchupprioritiesandtellustodosomethingdifferentifneedbe.AfterthatIkeepgoingonmy
workfortheday,takingperiodicshortbreakstowalkaroundandlookatsomethingthatisntcodeormy
currentproblem.
OnethingthatisalittleuniqueanddifferentabouttheteamIamcurrentlyonisthatduringlunchwe
almostalwaysplayagame.Wetendtoplaygamesthatwecanfinishinunderanhour,thoughweare
startingtotrygamesthatwecaneasilytakeapictureofandresumethenextday.
AfterlunchIjustkeepgoingonmyworkuntilitistimetogohome.Onethingalittledifferentaboutmy
situationisthatthereisonesystemthatIamtheonlyonewhoknowshowtofullyadministerordevelop
on.Thisisntexactlyideal,buttrainingothersonitisntexactlyapriority.SoIgetalotofhelpdesk
ticketsforthesystemandgetpulledintomeetingswheneverpeoplewantnewfeaturesorhavequestions.
Allinalltheaveragedayisnttoobad.Iworkatatechnologycompanyandwehaveaninternalinstant
messagingtool.Thewholedaytheteammaynotbetalkingalot,butwehaveconversationsandjokes
constantlyflyingaroundinthosemessages.Itmakesiteasytosocializewhilestillbeingproductive.
Everymonthortwowehavearelease,whichmakesforafarmorestressfulandvariedcoupleweeks.
Thoseweeksusuallyinvolvetestingtheentiresystemandfixinganybugswefindasquicklyaspossible.
Thenwereleaseovertheweekendandhavetoreleasealotofsmallfixesthenextweekaspeoplefind
morebugs.
7.Whatisthework/lifebalancelikeasaprogrammer?
Itisgenerallyverybalanced.Usuallyyougettoshowupandleaveatregulartimes,thoughthereare
exceptions.Ifsomethingiscriticallybrokenyouwillgenerallyhavetostickarounduntilthatisfixed.If
youhaveafeaturethatneedstobeinareleaseandyouarerunningoutoftimeyoullhavetoputinsome
extrawork.Ifmoretimeisneededtogetareleaseputtogetheranditcantbepushedbacktoanother
day,thenyouwillprobablyhavetoputinsomemoretimethere.Theextenttohowmuchanyofthese
thingsinterruptyourlifereallydependsuponwhereyouworkandwhoyourbossis.Alotoftimesitis
possibletoknowaheadoftimethatyouwillhavetoputinsomeextrahoursandyoucanplan
accordingly.
8.Whatsthebestpartofyourcareer?
Thepuzzles.Programmingthingsisreallylikeagiantlogicpuzzle.Ihavetoputdifferentthingstogether
tobuildanapplicationthatdoessomething.Imaygettoldthatwhensomeoneapprovesaniteminthe
applicationacertaingroupofpeopleneedstogetanemail,butIcantjustputthatinasis.Ihavetotake
thatandbreakitdowntoaverybasiclevel.OnceIhaveitbrokendownIarrangemypiecesthecode
soitwillaccomplishwhatIwant.Ialsolovewhenyougettocreatesomethingnew.Newfeaturesthat
arentreportsareusuallyalotoffuntomake.Sometimescomplexreportscanbeinterestingtoo.Having
userscometoyouandsayWeneedaGanttchartandthencreatingthatandhandingittothemisa
wonderfulexperience.Theytendtolookatyoulikeyouaresomesortofwizardormagician.

myteamisgeekytoo.Theconversationswellhavecangetinsane.Sometimesyouhearsomeonegoing
onaboutwhatMarvelisdoingwiththeircomicbooks.Anothertimeyouwillhearincrediblydetailed
gamereviews.Othertimesyoullhearrandombutfascinatingfactsaboutmovies.Occasionallythings
getphilosophical.Thereisneveraboringconversationandweallmakeeachotherlaughallthetime.
9.Whatstheworstpart?
Boringprojectsorprojectsthatwereonceexcitingbuthaveturnedmonotonous.Creatingareallybasic
reportthatjustlistsinformationisnotalotoffun.Theonlysavinggraceforthemishowquicklyyou
canfinishthem.Youdontgettodomuchcreationandthebiggestpuzzleishowyouaregoingtopullall
oftherightinformation.Therestofityouhavedonebefore.Sometimesbigprojectscangofromreally
interestingtomonotonousandthencontinuetodragonforweeks.Figuringouthowtodoeverythingat
thestartandhavingallofthesegrandideasisgreatitcombinessomeofthebestpartsofthejob.But
thenyouhavetodoallofthosegrandthingsyouthoughtupanditcanstarttogetboringreallyquick,
andthengetsfrustratingasyouforgethowyoudidsomethingsandplannedtodoothers.Youhaveto
balancemakingnotesandtryingtorememberthings.Thegranderyourideastheharderitistomakeall
ofthepiecesfittogethercorrectly.
10.Whatsthebiggestmisconceptionpeoplehaveaboutyourjob?
PeoplethinkthatsinceIworkwithcomputersIknoweverythingaboutcomputers,includinghowtofix
them.InmycaseIdoknowhowtofixcomputers,butthatisntascommonaspeoplethink.Another
commononeisthatsinceIcanwriteprograms,peoplethinkIcanwriteaprogramforanything.Ican
learntowriteprogramsforothersystems,buteveryplatformisalittledifferent.Icanttellyouhow
manytimesIvehadpeopletellme,Hey,Ineedyourhelp.IhavethisgreatideaforaphoneappandI
needyoutomakeit.TheyalwayslookalittledumbfoundedwhenItellthemImnotfamiliarwithhow
tomakephoneapps.
11.Anyotheradvice,tips,commentary,oranecdotesyoudliketoadd?
Ifyouwanttogetintoanykindofcomputerprogrammingyouwillneedtoknowprogramming
languages,butalotoftimesitistheabilitytolearnlanguagesquicklyandtherightmindsetthataremore
important.Youhavetotakecomplexproblemsandbreakthemdowntosomethingsimpler.Pokingholes
inideasandfindinglogicaledgecasesisalsoveryuseful.
AnimportantlessonIvelearned,thatIfeelisprettyusefulforeveryone,isalwaysownuptoyour
mistakes.AtthelastcompanyIworkedforIwasworkingonthefinancialsystemandhadpushedoutan
updatethatIhadwritten.ThenextdayamanagercameovertowheretheotherdeveloperandIsatand
toldusitlookedlike$2millionhaddisappearedfromthesystem.Iquicklysaidthatitwasprobablymy
faultbecauseIhadpushedoutsomecodeaffectingthatthepreviousday.AdmittingthatIhadmessedup
wentalongway.Iwasalsoabletofixtheproblemandmakethemoneyreappearinthefinancials,which
