Warm Up: Vocabulary to know: harvest, festival, crop


Ask the students how do you celebrate the harvest with your family? Have students go around
and share what they do.
Next, have them write down what they love the most about their harvest festivals. (food, family,
celebration time) 10 minutes

the first Thanksgiving celebrated in Massachusetts, 1621 by
the Pilgrims and Indians.
The student will understand that the culture of a society is
the product of the religion, beliefs, customs, traditions, and

Essential Questions of the Lesson:

Transition: Today we are going to learn about a very important harvest festival in America:
Thanksgiving. By the end of class you will be able to answer the question: (1) Why did Americans
first celebrate Thanksgiving? How did Americans first celebrate Thanksgiving?
2) How has life in America changed since the time of the first Thanksgiving?).
Procedure: Teacher will lead short introduction. Dissection activity. What two words do we see in
the word thanksgiving Thanks and giving. Ask students to define or describe what thanks
means. Ask the students to describe what giving means. 5 minutes
Each student will get a handout about the first Thanksgiving. Utilizing the popcorn method,
students will each take a time to read from each box. After each box is read, the students will work
together to complete the conjugations on the right side of the handout. 15 minutes
Now, lets see how people celebrate Thanksgiving today. In a few days, your will be celebrating
Thanksgiving with your host family. Here are some articles and infographics that will help you
learn more about how Americans celebrate this holiday.
