Library E-News
April 2016

Good Morning!

Our fiction section is genre-fied! I must say, it looks great and so

far the kids are enjoying finding books by subject! Over 360 outdated and low circulating fiction books were weeded, making
space for the 380 new books (mostly fiction) that we added this
year. With these additions and weeded items the average publication age of the fiction section has risen from 1997 (May 2015)
to 2002! Im really excited to be able to offer our kids more of
the current books they want!

April is National Poetry Month! I have a selection of our poetry

books displayed in the library (along with some shorter poems)
and Ive included some resources on the next page.

Please do not send kids down to make copies or to ask me to

make copies. Our copy machines are too delicate for student use.
I will be sending students who are sent with these requests back
without the copiesno exceptions, no matter how much I like
you! The library is available for teachers to make copies before
school, after school, during every period and during all 3 lunches.

8th grade advisory teachers: This is a great time for graduating

students to come see me if they have a library book on their record that they need to clear up. I put the overdue list in your mailboxes this morning; please let students know to come see me if
they owe books.

Voices in Poetry Series
These non-fiction books are great for Poetry
Month or anytime! They are short biographies of
poets that include poems, pictures, and artwork.
This series is interesting, visually appealing and
informative. Poetry can seem inaccessible to many
students, but these books really present poets as
interesting people and help put the works of the
poets in approachable context for readers.
Poets in the series are:
Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Langston
Hughes, EE Cummings, Williams Shakespeare,
and Edgar Allen Poe

Collaboration Highlights
Thank you to everyone who visited in March!
Come and see me or email me to sign your class
up for a visit. Below are some collaboration
highlights for February:

This month one 8th grade ELA teacher

brought her classes to the library to learn how
to create websites for the multimedia campaign component of their assignment. I set up
the student accounts through Weebly Education and taught the students how to use it.
Students then finished the research and website creation in their classroom. Some of the
sites they created are fabulous!

Several 6th grade girls entered essays in the

governors Governor for a Day essay contest. Many girls came to the library independently to work on their essays. Helping
them think about what they would do as governor and then proofreading their essays was
a great experience! Good luck to these girls!
