Managing Meltdowns
4/30/2016 - 9:00 am 11:00 am - Child Start (Region Two), Maira Castillo
There are few things sweeter than the sound of children playing. The pitter patter of little feet, the melodious
laughter of a happy child, but then you hear it. You hear that high pitched whine and you want to yell take cover!
The sounds of a ticking meltdown are unmistakable. If tantrums and meltdowns have you running for the hills, this
is the right class for you. In this class you will learn how to diffuse your tiny terrorists before a full meltdown occurs.
We will learn the warning signs of a meltdown, how to prevent them, and how to cope when you find yourself faced
with a full-fledged tantrum.

Playful Pursuits

success. Find out how you can skillfully guide and expand childrens learning through play and have fun doing it!

Literature and Puppet Fun

3/15/2016 - 7:00 pm 9:00 pm - Child Start (Region Two), Tanya Bulluck
Child care providers and teachers play an important role in helping young children develop their language and
literacy skills. As a caretaker, you have the opportunity to stimulate and inspire the development of strong listening,
speaking, writing, and reading with children in your care.
Come to this session to learn ways to incorporate literacy
in your classroom while using puppets. Puppets are both
entertaining and captivating. Young children can believe and
relate to them; they can enter and explore the fascinating
world that puppets can.

as if they are on repeat? Do you feel like your children
always want answers? Children dont ask questions to
drive you crazy, they ask because little minds want to
grow. With STEM concepts Why and How can finally be
answered through hands on, brain growing experiences. In

Getting Parents Involved in Child Care

By Kami Cohorst, Child Care Aware of Kansas, Project Director

At the end of the day, the

most overwhelming key to a
childs success is the positive
involvement of parents.
- Jane D. Hull

Families are childrens first and most important teachers, advocates

and nurturers. Strong family engagement in child care is central to
promoting childrens healthy development and wellness, including
social-emotional and behavioral development; preparing children for
school; seamlessly transitioning them to kindergarten; and supporting academic achievement in elementary
school and beyond. When children see good relationships between teachers/staff and their families, they feel
proud, important, loved and safe!
Taking time off from work or carving time out of busy schedules to participate in child care activities is often
easier said than done; however, when parents get involved they can help children become more comfortable in
the environment and interested in learning, which can lead to success in school.
How to Get Involved
Allow time at drop off or pick up to talk or schedule a weekly/monthly meeting(s) - these are great times
to visit about how things are going and any upcoming changes.
Sign-up on the parent helper list.
Get involved in the weekly email newsletter - help distribute information or contribute articles.
Participate in parent questionnaires - oftentimes these surveys impact decisions.
Share a special talent or skill - visit with the children about something that is unique about your family,
job or a passion/hobby of yours.
Check the bulletin board frequently for updates.
Attend special events or just drop in and visit.
Take Home Tip
Involvement in child care activities
does not end at child care. Keep the
interest going at home and talk
with children about their day!

Encouraging Healthier Foods

through Gardening

"

Encouraging young children to

make healthier food choices can
be difficult. One way to encourage
children to eat healthy foods is to
start a garden and include them in
the planning. Gardening is perfect
for young children because it will
spark excitement and curiosity.
Children will want to taste the
fruits and vegetables! Give them
tasks to help start and maintain
the garden - such as planting,
watering and weeding. Tools that
will help children be successful in
the garden might include; childsized gloves, rakes, shovels,
water pitchers and wheelbarrows.
Consider growing some of these
plants - lettuce, radishes, cherry
tomatoes, carrots, pumpkins,
zucchini, strawberries and
watermelon.
