WORLD WAR I
WARFARE
Kim Lichauer

Poisonous Gas
During the war, poisonous gas was often used to
overcome the stalemate that was often created by
trench warfare, making victories come sooner for
both sides. The gas was first implemented by the
French in the form of tear gas grenades during
the first month of the war. Though it was invented
by the French, the German army was the first to
seriously study to the development of chemical
weapons for use on a large scale. Though it
claimed many lives during its early use, once the
element of surprise was lost, casualties from the
gas dropped dramatically, as both sides took protective measures to be unaffected by the gas.

U-Boats

Machine Guns

U-boats, invented and used by the Germans,

were torpedo-armed submarines that were prepared to attack any and all ships that were said to
be sighted in war-zone waters. U-boats took a
huge toll on the Allies, proving themselves a formidable enemy.

The machine guns used during World War I

were largely of the heavy variety and not very
portable; it required a crew of four to six operators. Hiram Maxim invented a more successful
version of the old gun, which was rejected by the
British and embraced by the Germans. This revolutionized the battlefields because no externa
power was needed and it could fire up to 600
rounds per minute, perfect for mowing down line
after line of enemy troops.

Convoys
The Zeppelin
The Zeppelin was a rigid, hydrogen-filled airship, used extensively by the Germans. They
were used for the concept of strategic bombing. They were intended for aerial raids and
bombing, but were much more successful in
scaring people. The Germans did more damage with them in keeping the British awake
rather than actual physical damage.

A convoy was a croup of merchant vessels traveling together with or without a naval escort, for
mutual security. This tactic was developed by
the Royal Navy to cover their own troop movements for overseas service. With all of the Uboat attacks on American ships, convoys quickly became the most popular counter to the Uboat threat, used mostly by the Allies.

Airplanes
Airplanes were mainly used by the British
during tWWI. Planes were a revolutionary
item because during the war, aircraft became
much more sophisticated and had then differentiated into fighters, bombers, and longrange bombers. The use of planes during this
time ultimately led to the formation of the Royal Air Force.
