How have you grown as a nurse? Please explain and use specific examples.
This learning experience was priceless. At the start of my clinical experience I set goals for
myself, and with the help of my preceptor, I was able to accomplish all of my goals. In
addition, I was able to gain confidence in myself as a nurse in the psychiatric field. During my
time on the psychiatric unit at Howard County General Hospital I was given the opportunity to
create a patient treatment plan, improve my therapeutic communication techniques,
document in the Epic computer system, administer medications utilizing the Pixis operator,
plan and carry-out a mini group session and lead a group discussing patient goals. I
integrated into the unit as part of the team and therefore was able to immerse myself into
this experience. I have learned that psychiatric nursing is much more involved than some
people may believe and I plan to find myself as a psychiatric nurse in the future.

Preceptor/Instructor comments/ Student Learning Goals: (**If an item was identified as N or U, narrative
comments are necessary to clarify student performance**)Sarah did an amazing job in her mentor program. She
was extremely motivated to learn more about the dynamics of psychiatric/mental health nursing. She was able
to independently do an admission assessment, document on patients records about patients daily condition.
She also led a relaxation group for a group of patients as well as a led a full group on goals review. Sarah is
very kind and compassionate but was able to set clear limits with an inappropriate patient. She administered
medication in a very professional manner and was very comfortable with this process. She took the time to
learn about the various medication classifications and usages. Sarah was comfortable with the nursing staff and
easily made herself part of the team. She will be an amazing psychiatric nurse if she chooses that path in
nursing.
