EversinceIwasyoung,Ihavealwaysbeenfascinatedbycomputers,sonaturallyIchose
toresearchacareerincomputerscience,asitinterestsmegreatly.Thisattractiontocomputer
programmingrunsinthefamily,asbothmymotherandfatherworkassoftwareengineers,my
fatheratNokiaandmymotheratalocallybasedsolarenergycompany,EnphaseEnergy.I
emailedtwoofhercolleaguesatEnphaseEnergywhowerebothsoftwareengineers.Iasked
themaplethoraofquestionstoresearchhowtheirexperienceinthisfieldhasbeenforexample,
Whattheirfavoritepartoftheirjobwas?andWhatwasthehardestpartoftheirjob?Ialso
askedthemquestionsabouttheirhighereducationandifitpreparedthemfortheircurrent
assignments.ThetwoemployeesofEnphaserepliedreallyquicklywithveryinsightfulanswers.
Oneofthemansweredmyquestiononthehardestpartofthejoblikethis:
Interestingly,althoughwritingcode,whichitselfcanbethoughtofasanart(i.e.it
requirespatience,practice,endlessrefinements,andagreatdealofaestheticsense),is
funanddefinitelyenjoyable,itisnotwhatIlookforwardtoamajorityofthetime
WhatItrulyfindenjoyableisthepursuitofunderstandingtheproblems...
And,likeanythingworthpursuing,ittakestime,commitment,andperseverance.

Thisincrediblythoughtfulresponsemademeevaluatehowmuchdedicationyoumusthavein
thisfieldtobetrulysuccessful.IamverythankfulthatItookthisopportunitygraciouslyandI
gainedtremendousamountsofnewknowledgeandinformationfromit.
Whileresearchingabouttherequirededucation,amajorincomputerscience,Ifound
manyexcellentcolleges,severalinCalifornia,butalsovariousothersaroundthecountry.
Zoomingmoreintothevariousprograms,IwouldlovetogetacceptedbyCarnegieMellon
University.InthisrenownedinstitutionprofessorGuyBlellochspecializesinteachinghis
studentstheartofparallelcomputing,whereamyriadofcomputercodinglanguageslikeC++
andPythonarewoventogethertocreateafinalandefficientprogram.CarnegieMellonisan
accomplisheduniversitythatnotonlyteachesthestudentswhattheyneedtoknowtobe
successfulintheirfield,butalsomakessurethattheyarecomfortable,andprovidesthemwith
manyfacilities,aswellasbeinglocatednexttoabig,historiccity,Pittsburg.
AsIresearchedcompaniesthatcurrentlyneedsoftwareengineers,Icouldn'thelpbutbe
intriguedbythemultitudeofcorporationsthatrequirecomputersciencemajorstoworkfor
themfromsoftwaregiantslikeGoogle,toaeronauticalcompanieslikeLockheedMartin.From
searchingthroughvariousjoblistings,Icanconcludethathavingadegreeincomputerscienceis
agreatwaytogetajobformanyyearstocome,asthereisahighdemandfortechnologically
knowledgeablepeopleinourhighlyautomatedsociety,andspecificallyalargeneedfor
individualswhoareabletocodesolutionsforapluralityofproblems.Allinall,this
investigationhasreassuredmegreatlyinmycareerselection,andIcanonlybegladthatwhatI
wouldlovetoworkonisalsoahighlydesiredskillinthemarketplace.
