UGLIES:

UTOPIA PROJECT

UGLIES
In the novel Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld,
the characters live in a dystopian society
where government and social customs
are designed to ensure the fulfillment
and happiness of its people (based on
their vision of equality).

YOUR TASK
The scenario:
Our country is in decline and will soon face
extinction. Your group has been chosen to create
a plan for an ideal community. Your group will
present this plan to the class as if you are trying
to recruit your classmates as colonists to your
utopian community.

YOUR TASK
The plan must describe your community
and touch upon each of these subtopics:
1) Government and Values;
2) Location;
3) Family;
4) Education and Careers.
You will deliver your plan in an oral
presentation with a Google Slides
document as a presentation tool.

PART 1: CREATE YOUR

UTOPIA!

In teams of 4 students, you

will design your utopian
society and describe each
of the following subtopics:

1) LOCATION
Describe your community layout
and location.
(For example: Our community will
be one large building located on an
island in the Pacific Ocean.)

2) GOVERNMENT AND VALUES

In your perfect world, what would be

the ideal form of government?

Who will be in charge and make

decisions for your community?

How will the leader(s) be chosen? How

long will they serve?

2) GOVERNMENT AND VALUES

What are the rules in your community?
What do the people in your community
value most? (You are founding __________
because you want to live in a community
where people are ...)

Briefly describe five important values of

your community.

3) FAMILY
In your perfect world what would be the
ideal family?

How will families be formed? Who will

decide who marries whom and who has
children? How many children will be
allowed in each family?

Who will care for the children? Where?

3) FAMILY
Who will care for the elderly?
Where?
Think of at least one original family
ritual that all families of your
community will observe (like
celebrating Christmas with presents
and a tree).

4) EDUCATION AND CAREERS

In your perfect world what would be the

ideal

way to learn?

Describe your school.

Describe the school building (or location).
What age will students pursue their education?
What will be taught, with what tools, and by
whom?
Will girls and boys be treated differently?

4) EDUCATION AND CAREERS

Who chooses what career each

member of the community will
pursue and how is it chosen?
What are the different types of
careers available?
How long must citizens have the
same job?

5) TECHNOLOGY
Describe the level of technology for your community.
Will your community have futuristic technology or go
back to simpler times?

What methods of transportation will be

used?
What about communication?
What will be your communitys source of energy?

PART 1: GOOGLE SLIDES

Once you have outlined your society you
will create a Google presentation to
publicize your community.

Your aim is to make your utopia as

attractive and as exciting as possible to
incite people to want to join your
community.

PART 2: PRESENTATION
You will present your community and
website to the class in a 4 minute
presentation.
The goal of your presentation is to incite
your classmates to vote for your
community as the one they would most
like to join. Showing enthusiasm and
creativity is therefore a must.
