Lesson
Procedure

The goal of this lesson is to have the students apply the

knowledge that they have been working on previously so that
they can prove that they know what a metaphor and tone is,
and to apply that knowledge to analyzing a poem that they
are familiar with.
Activating Prior Knowledge
What is tone? What is a metaphor? Have the students
define both and write it on the board.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
After weve defined both, what affects the tone? My
example is rhyme, and thinking about the cat in the hat
with their simple rhymes. It adds a whimsical nature to
the poem, while no rhyme scheme or a more complex
form of rhyming gives the poem a more serious tone.
Write all of the examples that the students come up with
on the board.

Teacher
This lesson at first I thought didnt go too successfully,
Self-reflection
but then after reflection and grading the papers I dont
think it was as bad as I initially assumed. The papers
were overall pretty good, although people struggled with
identifying the tone and metaphor of the poem. We will
take the next day to remediate, go over what I expect of
them, and move from there.
