What is Deep Level Comprehension?

A Detective solves
crimes by examining and
evaluating clues and
personal records in order
to uncover the identity
and/or whereabouts of
the criminal.
Students need to know
how to examine and
evaluate clues found in
text to uncover deeper
meaning.
Sean Thomas 307000917

Deep Level Comprehension

A Good Detective uses

several tools to examine and
evaluate the clues or evidence.
Deep Level Comprehension
teaching strategies help to
provide students with those
tools to uncover the deeper
meaning of the text.

Level Comprehension

Two strategies used in the teaching of deep level

comprehension are:
Reciprocal Teaching
Questioning the Author

Reciprocal Teaching
Reciprocal Teaching strategy is like having a
conversation with a friend who continuously interrupts
you with following: I agree, I understand what you are
saying there, I can relate to that, I do understand what
you are saying there, I use to believe that now I
understand or I am not clear about what you are
saying there. Besides being annoyed you would find
yourself having to address those issues raised by your
friend. Reciprocal teaching attempts to have a similar
conversation only about a text. This deepens the
understanding of text.

Reciprocal Teaching
The dialogue or conversation about segments of
the text and it is characterized by the following:
Questioning
Summarizing
Predicting
Clarifying

Implementing Reciprocal Teaching

Step 1: The teacher models the strategies of questioning,

predicting, clarifying and summarizing with students on a
segment of text. Once students have an idea of how to use
the strategies and class is divided into groups

Step 2: Students in each group are given the task of acting
as questioner, predictor, summarizer and clarifier. Students
are asked to read a segment of the text. The questioner
asks questions about confusing parts. The predictor makes
prediction about upon coming event or points. The clarifier
clarifies confusing section of the text and the summarizer
summarizes keys ideas in the text. Students can assist
each other in their roles.

Step 3: The students change roles for the reading of the

next segment of the text. This gives each student the
opportunity to play each role: questioner, predictor, clarifier
and summarizer.

What is the role of the teacher?
The teachers role is to guide and develop the strategies of
questioning, predicting, clarifying and summarizing while
students work in small groups. This role decreases as
student become more competent with strategies.

Questioning the Author

In this strategy students engage in asking

questions of the author. Best suited for
nonfictional texts.

Questioning the Author

The following are examples of questions
used to interrogate the author and the
text?
What does the author mean here?
Why do you think the author wrote this
story?
What is the author trying to tell us here?
Does the author tell us why this happened?
Does this make sense given what the
author told us earlier?
