Whatdoyouthinkofwhenyouheartheword"assessment"?Maybeaunittestcomesto
mindorevenastandardizedtestgiventoalargegroupofstudents.Inallreality,thereismuch
moretoassessmentsthanjustatest.Infact,therearetwotypesofassessments,formativeand
summative.Summativeassessmentsarethemostcommonlyknowntypeofassessmentandare
givenattheendofaunitofinstruction.Theymeasurewhatastudenthaslearnedandareoften
calledassessmentsoflearning.Theseassessmentsaregivenascoreandrecordedina
gradebookoronastudentsrecord.Formativeassessments,ontheotherhand,aregiven
throughoutaunitofinstruction.Theseareoftencalledassessmentsforlearning.Teachersuse
thesetocheckinwithstudentstoseewhatlevelofunderstandingastudenthasonagiventopic
orconcept.Teachersthenusetheinformationreceivedfromtheassessmentstoguidetheir
instruction(Dreon,2014).
Thisprojectwillfocusontechnologytoolsthatcanbeusedforformativeassessment
becauseoftheirpotentialtobenefitstudentlearning.First,formativeassessmentallows
teacherstocatchmisunderstandingsbeforetheendoftheunit(Alber,2011).Teacherscan
adjusttheirinstructionthroughouttheunittomeettheneedsofeachstudent.Thisisastudent
centeredapproachthatwillbenefitstudentsandincreasestudentlearning(Chappuis,2007).
Second,formativeassessmentprovidespracticeandfeedbacksothatallstudentscanbe
successful.Studentsaren'tpunishedfornotgettingthe"right"answeronthefirsttry.Instead,
studentsaregivenmultipleopportunitiestolearnaconceptwithfeedbackandsupportfromthe
teacher.Third,formativeassessmentgivesstudentsmoreownershipofthelearningprocess.
Teacherscangivethestudentsthelearninggoalsatthebeginningofaunit.Studentswillreceive
feedbackfromtheirteacherthroughouttheunitandwillbeabletoselfassesstheirprogress

towardsmasteringeachgoal.Formativeassessmentsareusedasinformationtohelpstudents
improveratherthantojudgetheirlearning(Chappuis,2007).
Throughthisproject,teacherswilllearnabouttheimportanceofassessingtheirstudents
throughoutinstructionandhowtouseseveraltechnologytoolsforformativeassessment.
Teacherswillreceiveanoverviewofeachtoolandthenchooseatleastonetoimplementwith
theirstudents.ThisalignswithISTETeacherStandard2.d,providingstudentswithformative
assessmentsthatinformslearningandteaching(ISTE,2008).Teacherswillneedtoevaluatethe
toolssharedinthisprojectanddeterminewhichwillbebestsuitedbasedonthetechnologythey
haveavailableandtheneedsoftheirstudents.Thenteacherswillcreatedtheirownformative
assessmentusingoneofthetoolsfromthisworkshop.Creatingthisprofessionaldevelopment
forteachers,fallsundertwoISTECoachesStandards2.g,coachingandmodelingeffectiveuse
oftechnologytoolsforcontinuousassessmentofstudentlearning,and4b,providingprofessional
developmentinbestpractices(ISTE,2011).
