The Digital Portfolio

Practical Uses in K-12 Classrooms

What Is A Digital Portfolio?

"A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work
demonstrating the student's achievement or growth as
characterized by a strong vision of content," according to
Todd Bergman, an independent consultant and a teacher at Mt.
Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska.
A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work
that exhibits the student's efforts, progress, and
achievements in one or more areas. The collection must
include student participation in selecting content, the
criteria for selection, the criteria for judging merit, and
evidence of student self-reflection. - Northwest Evaluation

Types of
Portfolios
3 Most Common
The working portfolio, which contains projects the student is
currently working on or has recently completed.
The display portfolio, which showcases samples of the
student's best work.
The assessment portfolio, which presents work
demonstrating that the student has met specific learning goals
and requirements.

Why Use A Digital Portfolio?

Using the e-portfolio for formative assessment allows the
student to show knowledge and skills achievement across a
topic, semester, grade level, or even over the students entire
academic career.

The Power of Reflection

For digital portfolios to be truly valuable to both teachers and
students, they need to provide insight into not onlywhatstudents
created, but alsohowand why. If the ultimate goal is to develop
students as learners, then they need an opportunity for making
connections to content as well as the overarching learning
objectives. - Beth Holland
