Lesson Plan

Student: Yvette M. Ferrer

Professor: Professor Esposito

Course: EDU 521

Date: April 6th, 2016

Grade: 5

Content Area: Science

Topic: Properties of Mass & Volume

Instructional Objectives
After presenting and discussing the PowerPoint slides on properties of mass and volume,
students will be able to measure an object and find the mass and volume as well as density by
utilizing a scale balance and beaker. Students then will perform a scientific method activity
which involves observing and asking questions, forming a hypothesis, conducting the experiment
and drawing a conclusion by utilizing a balance and beaker that will aid them in finding their
answer which they will write in grams and milliliters.

CCLS/+NYS Standards and indicators

Mathematic (NYS) Standard #1: Measurement & Data
Students will measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standards
units of grams (g), kilograms (kg0, and liters (1). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to
solve one-step word problem involving masses or volumes that are given in the same
units, e.g., by using drawings (such as beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the
problem.
Indicators
o This will be evident through the science experiment students will be able to
demonstrate knowledge by being able to measure and find the mass and volume
utilizing a scale and beaker along with appropriate calculations written in grams
and milliliters.
Motivator
The teacher will show the students a marble and say Today boys and girls we are going to find
the mass, volume and density of this marble? Can anyone tell me how many grams this marble
has? Then, the teacher will say now can anyone tell me the method that is used? Now
remember, if youre not sure its ok! You will know the answer by the end of this science lesson.

Experiment

24 8.5 x 11 scientific method activity sheet

24 pencils
6 scales balances
6 gram chips bags
6 beakers

6 marbles
Strategies

Direct instructions: Teacher will guide the students through the lectures on properties of mass
& volume.
Do Now: Students will be provided an entrance activity sheet which will comprise of a word
search puzzle which will have all the vocabulary words from the previous lessons as well as new
words they will be learning in todays lesson. This will help the students refresh their memory on
key words from the previous two lessons.
Group Discussion: Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their findings to the rest of
the class and discuss how they obtained their answers. In addition, the teacher will ask the
students to write their conclusion of what they learned from the experiment on the Smart Board.
Read Aloud: Students will present their findings by reading aloud their scientific method
Activity sheet to the rest of the class.
Adaptations

A copy of the PowerPoint slides will be distributed to students who are visual learners
and who have difficulty taking notes.
For the students who have a hard time participating in group activities the teacher will
explain to them separately again, what is required of them to do in this activity with their
partners.

Extra time will be provided for students who need it.

Differentiation Instructions
Level 1: Students will provide a description on the different objects provided in the science
experiment and explain what they were used for during the experiment in a separate piece of
paper.
Level 2: Students will write in consecutive order the steps they took in question three which
consist of three parts by providing a detail description on what measures they took in order to
obtain their results on a separate piece of paper.
Level 3: Students will describe what occurred in the experiment that either enforced their
hypothesis which they formed in the beginning of the experiment or changed by providing a well
written conclusion utilizing the academic language learned in the lesson.
Developmental Procedures
1. Students will complete a Do-Now, where they will search in a word bank for
vocabulary words they have learned in the previous lessons in order to complete a word
puzzle.
2. Next, students will observe and listen to the lecture provided by the teacher in which
examples will be demonstrated utilizing scale balances and beakers to compare different
properties mass and volume in grams and milliliters.
3. After the lecture students will break up into groups of four and work together on a
science experiment in which they will utilize scale balances, beakers and a scientific
method activity sheet to measure different properties of mass and volume.
4. Finally, students will present their findings by reading aloud their scientific method
activity sheets to the rest of the class.
Assessment
Students will complete a quiz at the end of this unit which will entail questions on matter,
states of matter, chemical and physical changes, properties of mass and volume as well as
density.
Independent Practice
As a review on todays lesson I will provide the students with a homework work sheet
which will have questions on the lesson they have learned today. Furthermore, they will
be able to utilize the Power Point slides which I provided them with during the lesson.
Follow Up: Direct Teacher Intervention
Students who perform poorly on the quiz at the end of this unit will have to attend a
review session which will be held after school to review what they have difficulty
understanding.

Follow Up: Academic Enrichment

Students will search on the computer for one video that demonstrates one property being
measured in a scale balance or beaker and then write about what they observed in the
video.
