What is an Invention?
Can you name an Inventor?
What are some things you do when constructing an
invention.

8.3 United States History

Identify contributions of individuals and groups in U.S.
history.

In small groups students will be able to identify,

explain, and construct Garrett Morgans contributions to
civil rights.
Remembering, understanding, applying, and analyzing.
Level 2 Skill/concept- compare, relate, distinguish,
show, construct, and categorize.
Formative- Turn in the class activity for the day, when
this assignment is handed back the students are to
keep it in their social studies folder. Students will
receive points for keeping all of their returned
assignments during this particular lesson.
Summative- At the end of the unit students will turn in
their journal. This will enable me to check to see if each
student met the objectives for this particular lesson.
Researching and information
Fluency- evaluating the information of ethnical groups.
Digital Citizenship- using information about cultural and
social groups.

Task/ Behavior chart

Step-by-step instructions for the student. This way if
the student gets off task or falls behind they are able to

Activating Prior Knowledge
Yesterday we talked about Jackie Robinson and how he
changed the game of baseball.

Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Today we are going to learn about Garrett Morgan, he
was an inventor. He invented the Traffic Light and the
Gas Mask.

Big Idea Statement

Creating an invention is an extraordinary skill to have.
Essential Questions Statement
An invention is something an inventor creates, and it
takes some time constructing and planning this
invention.
Objective Statement
Students will be able to identify, explain, and construct
Garrett Morgans contributions to the civil rights 2/3
times.
Transition
Students will come back to the reading circle.

PreAssessment of Students
When reading the story, I will make note on which
students participate in the discussion while I read a story
about Garrett Morgan.
Modeling of the Concept
Once I finish reading the story about Garrett Morgan, I
will show the students images of Morgans inventions of
the Traffic Light and the Gas Mask. Not to mention show
the students a YouTube video about Garrett Morgan
explaining his inventions and giving some personal
information about himself.
Guiding the Practice
Once we finish the lecture part of the lesson, the
students will have an opportunity to construct their own
interpretation of Morgans Traffic Light or Gas Mask.
When constructing the invention, the students will have
free rain of what characteristics the students want to

give their inventions. For example, a student could give

their Gas Mask a power of becoming invisible. Once the
students have finished constructing their inventions they
will present their inventions to the class and explain
them. The students will be getting a presentation grade
as well.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will complete their journaling activity about
Garrett Morgan. They will answer the essential questions
for this particular lesson.

Garrett Morgan was an extraordinary inventor, but he
was not the one to obtain credit for his inventions. I
believe that it is important for students to understand
who was the true inventor. Garrett Morgan was a smart
African American. He deserves to be acknowledged for
all of his hard work.
