Level: Kindergarten

Subject Area: Science

Topic: Motion

Group Size: Whole Group

Date: 11/17/14

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce children to the word motion. The
children will be learning about the words push and pull. They will then work
together to sort pictures on the Smartboard into push and pull categories on a Venn
Diagram. This will be done in a whole group setting on the meeting rug.

Objectives:
SL.K.2. Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented
orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key
details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
K.CC.6. Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less
than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching
and counting strategies.
K.MD.3. Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in
each category and sort the categories by count.
S:SPS1:2:1.1 Make observations and explore materials using all of their senses (one
sense at a time).
S:SPS1:2:1.5 Sort and classify object materials and events based on one or more
attributes; and explain the methods used for sorting.
Materials:
*Smartboard
*PowerPoint presentation that includes the definition of motion, definition of push
and pull, and provides pictures that the children can sort on the Smartboard
together.
*Easel
*Dry erase marker

Procedure: (Lesson is open to change based on learner response/questions)
Introduction- To introduce the lesson, I will call all children over to the meeting rug.
I will have them all sit in a circle so they are all facing the Smartboard. I will then ask
them the question, What is motion? and record their answers on the easel beside
me. Once we have recorded everyones answers I will then open up my Smartboard
presentation.

Body of Lesson- I will explain to them what motion is.

1. I will say: Motion is the action or process of moving or being moved.
2. I will then ask them, What are some things that move? and then record
their answers.
3. I will then explain that some things can move by a push or a pull or both. I
will say that push is when you go away from and move forward.
4. I will then ask children to raise their hands and point to the list of things that
we came up with to decide which of those things are moved by pushing.
5. I will then explain what pull is. Pull is when you come towards yourself and
move in a specific direction to a certain point.
6. I will then ask children to raise their hands and point to the list of things that
we came up with to decide which of those things are moved by pulling.
7. I will then bring up pictures on the Smartboard with three categories push
and pull or both.
8. I will pick children who are sitting quietly with their hands raised to come up
and drag the picture under the correct category. When they make a selection
I will say, Why did you pick that? and have them explain their answer to
their classmates.
9. Once all of the children have had a turn to sort a picture into a category we
will go through and make sure they are all in the right place. I will
reemphasize how you can push some things and pull some things or do both.
10. To end the lesson, I will ask the learners if they can come up with anything
that you can push and pull and see what they come up with!

Accommodations: (UDL Guidelines)
*Provide options for recruiting interest
7.1 Optimize individual choice and autonomy

*Provide options for self-regulation

9.2 Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies

*Provide options for expression and communication

5.1 Use multiple media for communication

*Provide options for physical action

4.2 Optimize access to tools and assistive technologies

*Provide options for perception

1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information

Evaluation:
SL.K.2.- this objective will be met through formal observation of the placement
of objects on the Smartboard. I will have a checklist of students names to
either give them a check for proper placement or an x for improper placement.

K.CC.6. and K.MD.3.- these objectives will be met through informal
observation. I will listen to see if children are counting the number of objects
in each category.

13
S:SPS1:2:1.5- this objective will be met through formal observation. I will be looking
to see if they place their object into the right category. I will also be listening to their
answer as to why they did that. I will use a checklist to record this.
S:SPS1:2:1.1- this objective will be met through informal observation. I will ask
learners to see if they can come up with something that pushes, pulls, or does both at
the end of the lesson. If they can do this, I will record their answers on the easel and
then take a picture afterwards.

Extension:

SL.K.5. Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to

provide additional detail.

To extend this lesson, I will provide a paper that is split in half. The children will
need to write push and pull on each side. They will then need to draw a picture of
something being pushed and something being pulled and then write a sentence
about it. I will also expand the topic of motion around the classroom. I will add more
ramps to the block area along with different things that can go down the ramp such
as cars, balls, trucks, etc. I will also have an area for the arts. Children can either
color in a picture of something that pulls or pushes, or draw a picture of an object
they came up with.
