Webquest Teacher Pages

Introduction
This webquest is a performance-based task required for completion of ED275:
Technology for Teachers, a course offered in conjunction with the completion of the
Associate of Arts in Teaching transfer degree. This lesson is about the social, political,
scientific, and pop culture changes in America during the 1960s and the effect they had
on shaping the culture and character of the United States. 10 th grade students will visit
pre-selected websites to find information about major events that caused these changes
in America during the 1960s. The task assigned to students is to focus on primary and
secondary sources from the decade in order to cultivate a final multimedia presentation
that demonstrates these changes during the 1960s.
Learners
Anchored in 10th grade Social Studies Missouri Learning Standards and focusing
specifically on political and social changes of American society during the 1960s, this
webquest is the culminating activity in a 10th grade unit on the 1960s as a decade.
Before beginning the webquest, students need to know the following:
In terms of prior knowledge, the 10th grade students need to be able to define the
following terms based on the unit just completed:
Counterculture
Berlin Wall
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Cuban Missile Crisis

Adapted 1/24/13 from 63-410 WebQuest Template

Sit-ins
Freedom Riders
Civil Rights Movement
Feminism/Womens Rights Movement
SNCC
Job Corps
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Black Power/Black Panthers
British Invasion
Woodstock
EEOC
John F. Kennedy
Lyndon B. Johnson
Kent State
Democratic National Convention
Military Draft
Vietnam War

The students also need to know basic information about differentiating primary and
secondary sources. In addition, the 10th grade students should also be able to cite
primary and secondary sources in MLA format. Students also need basic computer and
Internet skills in order to accomplish this WebQuest.
Missouri Learning Standards
Social Studies: Describe the changing character of American society and culture (i.e.,
arts and literature, education and philosophy, religion and values, and science and
technology)
English Language Arts: Reading standards for literacy in History/Social Studies: Cite
specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources,
attending to such features as the date and origin of the information.
MoSPE Standards addressed in this unit include:
Standard #1 Content knowledge aligned with appropriate instruction. Quality
Indicator 5: Diverse social and cultural perspectives.
Standard #4 Critical Thinking. Quality Indicator 3: Cooperative, small group and
independent learning.
Standard #6 Effective Communication. Quality Indicator 4: Technology and media
communication tools.
Adapted 1/24/13 from 63-410 WebQuest Template

In addition to the learning outcomes mentioned above, this webquest also helps
students develop the following thinking skills:
Critical thinking (evaluation):
As the tenth grade students complete this WebQuest, they will be required to use
critical thinking skill in order to determine the cause and effect of major events that
occurred in the United States during the 1960s. In addition, they will be required to sort
through primary and secondary sources in order to obtain the information necessary to
complete their multimedia presentations.
Creative Production:
As a concluding activity for this specific webquest, the tenth grade students will
be responsible for producing a multimedia presentation to relay the information
ascertained from the primary and secondary sources used. Throughout this
presentation students will use their own creativity to digitally display the information.
Students are required to create a presentation consisting of 12 slides using either
PowerPoint or Prezi that includes pictures, videos, audio, and text.
Process
To successfully complete this webquest, the allotted time required is expected to
take a total of five, fifty minute classroom periods. Students will be placed in small
cooperative group of three to four people. Students will be grouped by drawing numbers
from a hat. Within those groups, students will decide who is 1) group leader, 2) research
manager, 3) presentation manager, and for groups with four students, 4) discussion
leader. Students will be provided with links to appropriate content, but it is then the
responsibility of the students to decide what information within those sites is applicable
to the multimedia timeline being built. Students will also be responsible for cultivating
the multimedia pieces that will frame their presentation from the sources provided.
Students should have access to programs or websites that will aid in the composition of
their presentation such as PowerPoint or Prezi.
Modifications for Exceptional Learners
For students with ASD, the instructor should provide an area of the room for
sensory needs. When needed, the student is able to take a break from their project to
compose themselves and participate in sensory activities until their stress levels have
lowered and they feel ready to join the class again.
For students with AD/HD, the instructor should provide an individual detailed
checklist and schedule for the project. Using this checklist and schedule will give these
students a more fixated process to work through and checkpoints to meet allowing for
more focus.

Adapted 1/24/13 from 63-410 WebQuest Template

For students who are ELL, the instructor should provide a checklist of tasks with
simplified language. Giving directions in small, distinct steps in order will allow ELL
students to complete the assignment based on their English language abilities.

Introduction
The 1960s in America was a decade filled with technological, social, cultural, and
political changes. It was simultaneously filled with highs and lows. The 60s will
always be remembered as a time that greatly changed the course of the nation.
Your city has received funding to develop a museum dedicated to highlighting the
events that occurred throughout the decade and the impact they had on the
nation. This is where you come in! You have been tasked with curating a
multimedia presentation that will serve as an introduction to the museum. How
can you best summarize the decade for visitors before they enter the museum?
What events do you think it is most important for visitors to learn about?
(Insert All Student Pages Needed for WebQuest)
The Task

Create a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation as a group: Presentation must include the

following: 12 slides (one title slide, one reference slide, 10 slides at one per year for
years 1960-1969).

Adapted 1/24/13 from 63-410 WebQuest Template

Each of the 10 year slides must contain AT LEAST two of the following elements:
text, picture, video, or audio.

The presentation as a whole must contain 6 textual components, 10 photographs, 3

songs (can be audio or video), and 3 video clips that are not songs. These elements
can be distributed at your groups discretion.

The Process
1 You have been assigned a group to work with. The five topics for the Sixties
museum are as follows:
a. Popular Culture
b. Counterculture
c. The Civil Rights and Social Movements
d. War
e. Politics
2 Assign roles in your group. The roles for this activity are:
a. Team Leader -- will be responsible for staying in contact with the teacher and
keep all group members on task.
b. Research Manager -- will operate the computer to search the internet for the
information your team needs to accomplish its task.
c. Presentation Manager -- will organize the group's final presentation.
e. Discussion Leader (if 4 in group) -- will lead the group discussion as the group
meets to share its research and design its presentation. For groups of three this
will fall to the Team Leader.
3. All members of the group are responsible for researching and deciding what the
presentation contains.
4. Research major events that occurred each year from 1960-1969.
5. Choose historical events, people, images, etc. that will represent each year.
6. Design your presentation layout. (Which elements will appear on which slides?)
7. Finally, build your presentation. Your visual presentation may be a PowerPoint or a
Prezi.
8. The key is to be creative, informative and to have fun!
9. Five extra credit points will be given to any student who dresses up for their
presentation (while adhering to school dress code).
You will be responsible for visiting the pre-selected websites. Here are the websites
you are allowed to visit during this webquest:
