Journal Entry #1
The high point of the trip for myself had to finishing the dry
wall of the home we were helping to build. Travelling south to
New Orleans with the Alternative Spring Break program, I was
unsure of the expectations to what we would be doing to help
rebuild a healing community. Having now returned I can say my
expectations were surpassed in the incredible amount of work we
were able to achieve while in New Orleans for just 5 days of labor.
When we finished the drywall of that home, it personally felt
satisfying to have aided in the recovery process of a once
prominent neighborhood. The home we worked is part of a larger
project to resettle displaced residents affected by hurricane
Katrina. As a result upon completion it will be sold exclusively to a
homeowner who had lost a house in the flood or plans to settle in
New Orleans for at least 10 years. To me helping with a project as
important as this was, it gave me the payment for all the hours of
work we put in as a team.
