In the first part of this lab the impact of changes in cutting speeds on feed force, radial force, cutting
force, and specific cutting power required to carry out a straight turning process were investigated.
Using the data given with the tool lead angle being 0º, the radial depth of cut being 0.01in, feed rate
being 0.0075 in/rev, and the cutting speed varying between 276 ft.min, 514 ft/min, and 1007 ft/min.



To carry out investigating the impact that cutting speed has on all the variables a sensitivity analysis was
used. Within excel, an ANOVA was run to test for the impact of changes in cutting speeds on feed force,
radial force, cutting force, and specific cutting power. The data was given and each ANOVA was run in a
separate excel worksheet, with the appropriate data from the original worksheet. Once all of the
ANOVAs were run, a summary table was created with the F-values and P-Values for the ANOVAs for feed
force, radial force, cutting force, and specific cutting power. In order for it to be statistically proven that
cutting speed significantly impacted any process variable, the F-Values and P-Values must be compared
to their respective critical values. If they are less than the critical value, then it is proven that cutting
speed impacts the process variable with a certainty of 95%. Likewise if the P-Value for a process variable
is greater than the critical ɲ of 0.05 then this also leads to the same conclusion.

  

After running all of the ANOVAs the resulting summarized results are given in the table below:

From the above table, it can be seen clearly which of the process variables was impacted by cutting
speeds. The F-Value had to be less than the F Critical, in order to statistically prove that the cutting
speed impacted the process variable, with 95% confidence. The ones that passed this test were Feed
force, cutting force, and specific cutting power. All of these process variables also had a p-value that
indicated that the respective process variable was significantly impacted by the cutting speed.
