9:00AM

GENERAL OUTCOMES

Math General outcome 1: Develop a number sense

SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

1.3 - Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by 2s, starting from 1

2.0 - Demonstrate if a number (up to 100) is even or odd

5.0 - Compare and order numbers up to 100

10. 4 - Apply mental mathematics strategies, such as: two more, two less

PROCESS OUTCOMES

Communication

Connections

Reasoning

Visualization

Metal mathematics and estimation

CROSS-CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS

ART - 1.0 - analyzing structures in nature

NUMERACY/LITERACY; ENGAGED/ETHICAL/ENTREPRENEURIAL
STUDENT

Think critically - students thinking about what comes in sets of twos in life.

Demonstrate good communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively

with others - during the game

KAGAN STRATEGIES/INSTRUCTIONAL INTELLIGENCES

Think Pair Share

Stand up hand up pair up - to determine who math buddies are

Rally Robin- when students are going back and forth saying numbers and adding
two each time.

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES/LEARNING STYLES

Interpersonal - students are watching the characters in the book take place in
groups of two, the students are also working on the hundreds charts with the
partners within the class.

Naturalistic - Students knowing who comes in pairs of twos

Logical Mathematical - students become better at problem solving due to the idea
that their math skills are improving

BLOOMS TAXONOMY GUIDING QUESTIONS

Explain how this activity can connect to real life situation

How would you describe how the numbers are going up

MATERIALS

100 sheet (1 for each student)

Pencil crayons for entire class

Smart board

Time for Bed story book - written by

Mem Fox

MANIPULATIVES

Counters (10) per each grade 1

student

TEACHER ACTIVITIES

Anticipatory Set (Hook)

The lesson begins with taking the entire grade two class (making sure they walk
quietly and in single file) down the hall to go the their Math Buddies which is the
grade one class. Once the students are in the classroom, instruct every student to sit
down on the carpet and take out the book Time for Bed written by Mem Fox, read
the book loudly and clearly to both classes, occasionally calling on a grade two student
to read a page. (Note. Only call on a about 3 students of your picking) After about
three pages of the book pick ask the question What are you noticing on each page,
how many animals are shown on each page

Once the book is finishes:

Ask the questions to both classes (making sure they raise their hand and you pick them
to answer prior to answering)

Who is putting the baby animals to bed every night?

Who puts you to bed at night?

What animals could be added to the story?

How many animals are listed in the story? (if students do not remember flip
back to page one and have students count by twos as you are turning the pages

Tell the students to find their common math buddies, if the math buddies are not
known, ask both classes to line up on two separate lines, with the grade two class in
one and the grade one class in the other, match the two classes up so that they are in
pairs. If there is an uneven number of students, ask Mrs Carlson to set up the leftover
students with groups as three, with two grade one students and one grade two student.

[ min]
Practice/Development

Give each group of two or three ten counters from the container Instruct the
students to count by starting off with two counters and adding two counters for
each group of animal.(two counters for the mice, two counters for the geese,
etc.)

Once all the materials are handed out, allow three groups to go out to the hall
(if you are not sure which groups to allow out in the hall, ask Mrs Carlson)

Once the students have gone though each animal ask them to colour in the 100
chart based on the groups of two they have recently learned. As the students are
coloring in the number chart make sure they are speaking aloud. The students
will notice that if it is an even number that it is a multiple of two. (ie.
2,4,6,8,10). Ensure that the students will fill in the entire 100 chart.

Watch the students fill out the hundreds chart (multiples of two, not the entire
chart) with their buddies,
o

Walk around the groups and reinforce what the even numbers are

I will give you a number you tell me if it is even or not (thumbs

up/ Thumbs down)

Get entire classes attention by speaking loudly and saying I want your
attention in 5,4,3,2,1 making sure to count down slightly slower than
saying the rest of the statement, then go on to explain that you will give
the entire class a number to start off from, then with their partners they
have to rally back and forth going up by twos to go up to 100.

Demonstrate this with another teacher by saying starting at 46,

ending at 74

person A : 48

Person B: 50, etc until getting up to 74. Then give the class three
sets of numbers (of your picking) and walk around the class to
check the students understanding.

Hand out another piece of blank white paper to each student and ask
them to draw a picture of things that come into mind when they think of
groups of two

If the students cannot think of anything give them examples of

things

Begin to let grade two students do this with their math

buddies, explain to the grade 2s that they are the
teachers and to help show the grade 1s why things are
even and odd

Ie. eyes, arms, two seats on a seesaw, two wings on a

bird, two feet, etc.

End the lesson off with a final game of Odds and Evens, which the
grade 2s will say a number to the grade ones, and the grade ones will
give their partners a thumbs up it the number is positive and a thumbs
down if the number is negative.

These activities should have further developed the students understanding of the
multiples of two. By doing these activities it not only helps the students work together,
but also further advances both grade math abilities. Because the grade two students
who are more advanced in math are able reestablish their math abilities and teach
others so they become experts on the topic.

[ min]
Check for Understanding

Once students have all entered the class again, a 100s chart will be brought up
on the smart chart that will be filled out, the students will compare the correct
chart to their own making sure that they were not off on any numbers and no
number has been forgotten to be filled in.

The students will also be asked questions on why things occur in twos in the
real world.

Thumbs up and thumbs down exercise

Rally Robin exercise will also ensure that both grades are able to distinguish
two more

The exit slip for the students will be that they have to hand in both their
hundreds chart and their picture that they drew.

Closure/Reflection

At the end of the lesson the students in both classes will be able to count up to
100 by twos,

The students will have learnt a pattern scheme as well as a rhyme scheme

Explain to the class i am going to say a number and we will count by twos
until was stay stop
o

Ie 20, 22,24

Let math buddies do a check with their partner

Give these math buddies a few starting examples

[ min]

MODIFICATIONS and EXTENSIONS

The number chart is also able to be extended to when the grades are learning
about no only odd numbers but patterns of 3,4, etc.

EVALUATION and ASSESSMENT

Informal assessment with thumbs up thumbs down (kagan strategy)

NOTES AND REVISIONS

Mrs. Carlson was not in class, so be prepared to judge who seems responsible
enough to go out into the hall

Print enough 100 sheets for both classes to do the activity.

Finding a larger version of the book would be recommended so all students are
able to see.

A race to 100 game should be used as a backup because activities go faster than
you would expect
