CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT 2
LEARNING AIM B: DESIGN DIGITAL GRAPHIC
PRODUCTS
NAME: CHLOE H-S

Introduction

This assessment requires the planning and creating of a new logo for
the use of Cove School. I will consider the audience and purpose for
this design, then I will look online for inspiration and ideas, then create
prototypes and test these to see which one works best.

Audience and purpose for the

new logo

The new logo should appeal to a target audience of children aged 1016 who are and could be in the future attending this school. Also,
parents of these children need to be impressed because the logo would
reflect the school, hopefully in a good way. The location for the target
audience would be the people in the Farnborough area who could be
attending Cove School.
The logo could be used in many ways, including on the uniform, on
newsletters, the website, other publications (i.e. prospectus, brochures,
etc.), on signs around the area and on PE kit.

Next I will endeavour

to explain why I
chose these fonts

make sure my work is

was questioned

It was used as they

are the colours of the
4 houses, but to
improve I will stick to
what is already in
use.

I will use more

appropriate colours
next time.

Logo Prototype 1

For my logo I have come up with two different designs. In the first design I
have used a circle as my background shape. A circle would be a nontraditional shape for a logo, as in the research I conducted, I found most
badges were square, shield-shaped, or had no obvious outline.. My circle will
be made up of 4 quarters, all which will be coloured the 4 colours of the Cove
School houses: blue, green, yellow, and red. It will also display an open book,
which represents the schools academic purposes, and active learning within
the pupils. The `h` of school has an arrow pointing up which indicates the
schools motto of `advancement and values` and also shows how the school is
moving forward in its teaching and education. For this design I will use a black
san-serif font to show although this is a `highly performing` academic school, it
also has a `fun side` to it. I used the colour lack as it stands out as bold against
the bright colours of the background, and it is a traditional colour. I think this
logo will appeal to students and will stand out when on uniform and school
publications.
However, I feel that this logo is quite childish, and would not appeal to the
older years, as block colours are usually asssociated with younger children,
and the logo does not inclde intricate patterns.

Logo Prototype 2

In my second logo design I have used no shape background, but if I did it

would be a square. On the colourless background, there would be the
Cove School abbreviation symbol (CCS), in its original colours in a blue and
yellow serif font, as this makes it look more professional. I have used a
colourless background so this logo can be imprinted on any background,
and the square border will not look unprofessional. In the bottom left corner
there will be a swooping design of strips of various thickness and colour,
which will be the schools traditional colours, black, blue, yellow and white.
On the outer blue strip there will be the numbers 1877, the year Cove
School was built. This will be a san-serif font (contrary to the letters on this
logo), but still smart. I have kept some of the original designs for my logo but
have changed the placing of some objects and I have added certain
details. I think the logo will appeal to students and parents because it has
not been altered too much from the current logo (which has remained the
same for a long period of time), and is simple and stands out against all
backgrounds.
I prefer this logo rather than the first prototype, as it has a traditional
appearance to it, and looks more mature in style and colour.

The vector tools I used to

create the shapes on my logo.
I used vector images because
they are made up of block
colours, and geometric
chapes, which are common to
school logos. This gave my logo
a more traditional look, which i
was aiming for in this design.

This shows that each vector

objects are on different layers. I
used layers in my project so I could
move and edit a certain object
without disrupting the other layers.
This meant I could improve my
design with ease.

Different file types

This is a GIF file.

G- Graphic
I- Interchange
F- Format
Saving something as a GIF file
flattens all the layers together and
locks them into place so the work is
not fully editable in this format.
Work would be saved in this format
if it is the final copy and will not be
edited any more. In this format the
file can be moved without the
layers moving.

PNGs support Lossless Data

Compression. This is a `class of data
compression algorithms that allows the
original data to be perfectly
reconstructed from the compressed
data`. This means you can regain the
work in the exact way you left it even
though it has been stored with less bits
than it originally had, to save space.
You work with layers in this setting so
can move things around.

Logo in Use

This is the current

Cove School
website which has
not been edited.

This is the edited

version, where I
have replaced the
logo with my
design.

Logo in Use

This is my chosen logo on the Cove School

Blazer. This would what my logo design would
look like if it was embroidered into the uniform. I
think it gives the uniform a professional look, and
the transparent background worked to my
advantage in this instance, as it would be less
aesthetically pleasing if there was a white
square behind the logo. However, as the blazer
is black and so is the bottom colour of my logo,
some of the logo is lost and cannot be seen on
the black. I could improve this by adding a thin
white strip around the exterior of the badge, to
ensure it can be distinguished from the blazer.

This is what it would look like on a Cove

School sports kit. I think the colours work
well with the rest of the kit, however the
black square corner on the logo looks too
sharp, so to improve this I could round the
corners to give it a smoother appearance.
I liked the idea of having the logo on both
the top and the shorts of the sports kit, but
on alternate sides. I think not having the
logo on the back and the front was a
good idea because if there was 3 logos,
the kit would look too crowded and it
would be too much.

Uses around the School

My logo in food technology

There are lots of ways in which this graphic

could be applied around the school, but I
have chosen food technology and
basketball, as these are things I love, and
are familiar with. These graphics show my
logo is suitable to be used in multiple areas
around the school, and are not limited to a
few, as it shows the versatility of the design.

The Process

Step 1: Find a `hi-res` suitable bitmap graphic.

This is an image that has a DPI of 150 or above,
and one with patterns or images that are not
too intricate, because editing them may
become difficult.

Step 3: Edit the background by applying

suitable filters to enhance appearance
of technology.

Step 2: Remove the background in a program such as

Adobe Fireworks, using the `eraser` tool, or the `magic
wand` tool ,so that only the object that will be the focal
point is remaining.

Step 4: Combine the two assets by

importing the focus point (Step 2) onto
the edited background, and save as a
JPEG.

Summary

I have created a logo for Cove School using the vector tools in
Fireworks, which I feel is appropriate as it includes the main features
of the school; the abbreviations of the schools name, the colours
of the current abbreviations, and the date the school was built. I
have considered the audience and purpose of the logo, as these
factors are important when designing a product. I think, as it has
not been completely changed, it will appeal as much as the
current logo does, if not more because it gives more insight into
the schools history and has more colour. I think it will look good on
school publications and uniform as it has a more definite shape
than the one used at the moment. To make it better next time, I will
use more intricate designs and/or patterns to make the logo more
creative and less simplistic. Also I will not have a completely clear
background as it appeared white on the website which was too
bright and looked quite empty, but will have subtler space-fillers. I
could also edit the edges so they appear softer, or alter the exterior
colour so the logo can fit on black backgrounds.
