Lesson Title: Datapalooza

Grade Level: 9th Grade
Subject: Mathematics
Related Lessons: Data Analysis and Probability
Unit: Data Use and Statistical Thinking to draw inferences, make predictions and
justify conclusions

GOALS
Content Standards:
Common Core State Standards
Functions (F-IF.4)
For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key
features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing
key features given a verbal description of the relationship. Key features include:
intercepts; intervals where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, or
negative; relative maximums and minimums; symmetries; end behavior; and
periodicity.
Functions (F-IF.7)
Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph, by
hand in simple cases and using technology for more complicated cases.
Standard for Mathematical Practice #4 Model with Mathematics
Speaking and Listening Anchor #2-3
2. Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats,
including visually, quantitatively, and orally
3. Evaluate a speaker's point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric.
Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Mathematics
Data Analysis & Probability
9.4.1
Display and analyze data; use various measures associated with data to
draw conclusions, identify trends and describe relationships.
1 Describe a data set using data displays, including box-and-whisker plots; describe
and compare data sets using summary statistics, including measures of center,
location and spread. Measures of center and location include mean, median,

quartile and percentile. Measures of spread include standard deviation, range and
inter-quartile range. Know how to use calculators, spreadsheets or other technology
to display data and calculate summary statistics.
9.4.2
Explain the uses of data and statistical thinking to draw inferences, make
predictions and justify conclusions.
1 Evaluate reports based on data published in the media by identifying the source
of the data, the design of the study, and the way the data are analyzed and
displayed. Show how graphs and data can be distorted to support different points of
view. Know how to use spreadsheet tables and graphs or graphing technology to
recognize and analyze distortions in data displays.

ISTE NETS-T 1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity

2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and
assessments
3. Model digital age work and learning
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

ISTE NETS-S 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking,

construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes using technology.
2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and
environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at
a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the
learning of others.
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple
audiences using a variety of media and formats.
3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to
gather, evaluate, and use information.
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students
use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage
projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools and resources.
5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and
societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical
behavior.
6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a
sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and
operations.
Objectives:

Students will use the interactive Google Data Explorer to analyze a complex
data system.
The students will explore the fertility of countries versus various other
independent variables to understand how certain variables affect change.
Students will study how the Google Data Explorer works and they will
understand how access to this information may help them with data for other
projects they encounter in their schooling.

Action
Before-Class Preparation: Before the lesson, visit the Google Public Data
webpage by visiting: https://www.google.com/publicdata/directory. Make
sure that you understand the website and how to use the various
functions. Follow the student instructions first so that you can answer any
questions that the students may have.
Teacher Instructions
Instructional Activities:

1. Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and left-click the following link to
visit the Google Public Data Explorer website
https://www.google.com/publicdata/directory
1.

The following image should appear on your internet browser:

2. Choose a Pre-made data set by selecting Explore the data on any of

the scrolling charts on the homepage.
3.

Select chart type bubble:

4. Hover over the various bubbles (representing countries) and analyze

how this pre-made chart uses the X and Y axis to compare similar
variables (Life expectancy and Fertility Rate).

5.

Manipulate your own data chart by selecting data for y axis:

6. Select data for x axis (if needed)

7.

Select Compare by data (minimum of 2 if possible):

8. Click the play button to see how the data changes over time:

9. Change the chart types from bubble, to line, bar and graph to see
which graph is best:

Line Graph

Bar Graph

Graph

10.
Change the variable types to compare with other
countries/variables:

Student Assignment:

1. From your created data set, make observations and written statements about
those observations in a Google Doc as to why a certain event is true.
2. Students must make at least five statements with evidence from the chart
and from the Web to back up their claims from the data.
3. All sources must be cited.
4. You will present the statements and supporting evidence to the class through
a multimedia presentation.
Two Inquiry Questions: Answer the following questions about your data
set:
Application Question: What is the most effective type of chart for the data set that
you created? Why?

Analysis Question: When creating your chart, explain how you chose your X and Y
axis data to effectively compare variables.
