Overview
This lesson focuses on internet safety. The teacher will prepare the students by asking questions about their
knowledge of internet safety. Students will do research and write a brief summary over internet safety. The
students will be put into evenly divided and strategically planned groups for the first two portions of the
assignment, but will work independently for the other two portions. The students will do their work in the
classroom and during computer lab time. The students will be provided with all necessary instructions, an
assessment rubric, and various teacher approved websites. Accommodations will be provided as needed. The
students will end the assignment with a reflective survey.

Essential Questions
1. Why is it important to learn internet safety?
2. What are dangers or issues that can arise from not using the internet safely?
3. What are ways in which you can use the internet safely?

Assessment
1. The students will brainstorm ideas about internet safety within their groups.
Differentiation- Groups will be evenly divided and strategically planned. Accommodations will be made as needed.

2. The students will work within their groups to research information about internet safety from the teacher
approved websites provided to them.

3. The students will work independently while writing their brief (1-2 paragraph) summary of what they learned.
Differentiation- The teacher will be available for assistance while the students are working independently, and
accommodation will be made as needed.

The assignment will be graded based on a rubric.

Resources
1. The students should be able to access and navigate the websites provided to them.
2. The students will access the teacher approved websites that are provided to them.
3. The students will be provided with an assessment rubric to use as reference when writing their brief summaries.

Instructional Plan- Preparation


The students will need to identify their own experiences with internet safety. The teacher will ask students what
they already know about internet safety. The teacher will ask the students what they think are ways to use the
internet safely. Some students may have issues with accessing and navigating the websites.

Management
The students will be required to work on their assignment in the classroom. The students will be divided into
equal, strategically planned groups when brainstorming and researching information. The students will work in
their groups at the classroom computers and will work in the computer lab during lab time. Once the
brainstorming and research portions of the assignment are complete, the students will work independently to write
their brief summaries over what they have learned. The students will work independently when completing the
survey at the conclusion of the assignment.

Instruction and Activities


The teacher will provide the necessary instructions, websites, and assessment rubric for the assignment. The
teacher will demonstrate how to access and navigate the websites provided to them and will be available to guide
and assist the students as needed. During the brainstorming and researching portions of the assignment, the
teacher will place the students in evenly divided and strategically planned groups that will accommodate students
who may have trouble navigating the websites or reading the website content. The students will be required to
complete a brief summary over internet safety and a reflective survey over the assignment.

Differentiation
The students will work in evenly divided and strategically planned groups for the brainstorming and research
portions of the assignment. This will ensure that each group has at least one student that is a fluent reader and can
navigate computers well. The students will work independently while completing the brief summary and the
reflective survey. Students will be able to choose from a variety of websites to use when researching their
information. The teacher will be available to help any students who may have questions or need assistance.
Students will have the opportunity to do additional research on this topic after this assignment has been completed
and they may present this information to the class. No assistive technologies will be needed at this time, but they
will be implemented as needed along with any other accommodations.

Closure and Reflection


Each of the students will write a brief summary (1-2 paragraphs) of what they learned from this assignment.
Each of the students will complete a survey at the end of this assignment to serve as a reflection. The survey will ask
the following questions:
1. Did the students find the lesson helpful? Why or why not?
2. What were the students likes and dislikes about the assignment?
3. Did the students like working in groups or would they have preferred to complete the entire assignment
independently?
4. Did the students find the websites provided to them sufficient enough to complete the assignment, or would they
have liked to have had additional resources?
The teacher will review the surveys and use the information gathered to see how the lesson could be taught differently
in the future.
