Use commas to separate a list of three or more things or phrases.
Example: I have a brownie, an apple, and a bag of chips for lunch today.

When you have MORE than one adjective before a noun, separate the adjectives before the noun with
commas.
EXAMPLE: I heard the soft, scratchy sounds of the mice.

How to tell if something is a compound sentence: Everything before the conjunction, and everything after the
conjunction can stand as a sentence
Compound sentence example:
Tara and Joel wanted to attend the baby shower, but they left the party too late.

I went to the store, but it was closed because the snow was up to the doors

Put a comma after the dependent clause if it comes before the independent clause
Example: Since the car broke, I walked home.

Since I did not do my homework the night before, I had to get an R.

When you do NOT need a comma in a complex sentence


If the independent clause appears before the dependent clause, NO comma is needed.
Example: I love Mozarts music because is relaxing.

My family went to the amusement park because it was my birthday.

Commas after transitions:


Use a comma after transitions (words that help you go from one thought to another). These receive commas
when they appear at the beginning of sentences.
Examples of transitions:
For example, Furthermore, By the way, Then, First, Last, Consequently, Afterwards
Example: We will go to the park. Then, we will go to the store.

First, you have to mix the eggs, milk, and flour to make the dough for the cookies

A panda walks into a restaurant and orders a bowl of spaghetti. After eating, he pulls out a squirt gun and
sprays the owner. Then, he walks out.

If an introductory clause (words that introduce) comes before the subject, use a comma. This is
easiest if you see examples.
Ex.
In Paris, France, famous designers display their beautiful gowns.
Before June 12, 1872, no woman was allowed to enter that building.
Sometimes these clauses are prepositional phrases, or phrases that show relationship (timing, personal
relationship, etc.) These phrases start with words like on, after, before, with

The following sentences begin with some type of introductory clause. Please add the comma! Remember: it
will need to go before the subject!

Set off a direct quotation from the rest of the sentence with a comma (or an exclamation mark, or
questions mark
Examples: She said, I have a dog!
I have a dog, she said.
DO NOT USE COMMA if a question mark or exclamation is used in quote:
I have a dog! she said.
You can NEVER use a period in the middle of a sentence.

Commas when you are saying someones name!


Use commas to set off words used in direct address (in other words, to block off the name of the
person you are addressing.) You need to use them on both sides if the name is in the middle.
Examples:
Mrs. Greene, this package is for you.
Do you know, Mary, when the paper is due?
You need to clean your room right now, young man!
A common mistake:
Do not put commas around a persons name if you are not addressing him or her.
WRONG EXAMPLE:
Anna, is my friend.- The comma is WRONG because you are not talking to Anna
