ofthequote,theyreflectwhatastoryistryingtotellwithoutusingwords.Theyseestoriesand
findawaytocaptureitandtellthepublicadifferentangleofitthattheyneverknewwasthere.
Asreporters,theyopenthemindsofmanyandhavethepowertogiveavoicetostoriesnoone
knewwerethere.Beingareportergivesthemthechancetodiscoversomethingnew,themain
goalofeveryreporter,photographer,journalist,etc.is,tellingthestory.

throughouttheyearsinvariousways,fromthebeginningoftimetotoday.
Providingthepublicwithnewshasbeenavailabletopeoplesincetheearly1920s,but
theyhaventbeenabletophysicallywatchnewsanchorsreportittothem,theydidnthavethe
chancetoseethefaceofthepersonwhomightbereportingthebestorworstnewstothemuntil
thelate1940sandearly1950swhencoaxialcabledecidedtostartconnectingmajortelevision
markets.Astheevolutionoftelevisionandhowthenewswasbeingpresentedtothepublic
startedtochangeatthetimeonly9%ofthehouseholdsinAmericahadtelevisions,whichonly
consistedofthefourmainchannelsatthetime:NBC,CBS,ABC,andDumont.NBC'sreporter

experimentwithtelevisionprogrammingandmakingtheirnewsvisualforpeopletoseeand
experiencewhatwasphysicallyhappeningtotheworld.Intheearlyyears,itconsistedofjust
audio,butnownotjustaudiowasbeingpresentedduringthe1930s.Mostnewsstationstarted
theprocessofbroadcastjournalism,forexample,DouglasEdwardsbecameAmericasfirstnews
anchor.Voiceoverswithwirecopyandstillphotographswerethenormatthistime,whichisin
starkcontrasttopresentdayjournalism.
Thefirstcoupleyearsofreportingimportantnewsmanydidnottakebroadcastingas
theirfirstchoiceincareerwiseduetothefactthatitwasstillbrandnewtothepublicand
companiesproducingthemedia.Mostjournalistsleanedtowardsradiostationsornewspapers.In
1963,PresidentKennedy'sassassinationputbroadcastingnewsonthemapbecauseunlikethe
newspaper,theycouldntgetimagesoftheeventconstantlymovingandradiostationsdidnot
givethepublicthespecificimagesoftheeventhappeningtheycouldonlyspeakuponit.
Televisionprovidedmovingimagesascomparedtothestillphotosinnewspapers,andliveTV
broadcastshadthesameimmediacyasradio.TheageofTVnewshadbegun.(Halbrooks)

broadcasterscommunicatedimportantfactsanddetailstothepublicstartingfromthewaythey

wastalkingatainternationalconferenceonthetopicofbroadcastjournalismintheearly'90s,as
hedescribedtheimmediatechangeofthenewsmediaandtheeffecttechnologyhashadonthe

impactofinformingimportantnewstothepublic.Henotedhow,atthetimeoftheCivilWar,it
tookweekstoreceivetheresultsofbattlesandcomparedtonow,bythetimeoftheGulfWar,
wewerewatchingnewsasithappenedwithoutthetimeforthejournalisttoreflectonthe

Intheprocessofgettingastoryouttothepublic,areporterfirsthastodeterminewhat
storywillcapturetheattentionofmillions.Areporterwiththepropertoolswillstartoutby
takingnotes,locatingpeopletogetquotesandcreatestories.Comparedtointheearlyyearsof
broadcastjournalism,reportershadtotakenotesfromanotepadorphysicallyrememberwhata
witnessoranypersoningeneralhadjustinformedthem,butnotwithtodaystechnologygetting
quoteshasbecomeeasierforjournalist.UsingrecorderslikeZoomH1,shotgunmicrophone,
lapelmicrophone,etc,itbecamesimplyeasierforjournaliststorememberimportantdetails.
Newsbroadcastersalsoupgradedtheireditingskillstomakethenewsmorepresentableandhave
enoughdetailtocapturethepublic'sattention.AnexamplewouldbebacktotheVietnamWar
when,duringthattime,cameramenwereshippingfilmfromfieldcamerasfromSaigontoNew
Yorkwhereeditorscutthefilmintostories.Nowtheeditingprocesscanbeassimpleasstarting
toeditcertainfootagefromthecamerawherethecameramancanmarkshotsforlateruseand
recordthemtothumbnailsforbrowsing.Astheprocessinhownewsbroadcasterwere
portrayinginformationhaschangedovertheyearscontinues,peoplearebecomingmore
experiencedandhaveafurthereducationinhowtoworkthemediaandgetthepublics
attention.Beforetheteleprompterwascreatedfornewsanchorstoreporttheirlines,theyhadto
memorizeascriptandreportitwithoutmistakes.JohnCameronSwayzewasoneoftelevision's
firsteveningnewsanchorsalsoknowntobeanexpertonthisprocesswithoutthehelpofa

allstartedwouldbeCBSnews.Eventhoughthechangesoftechnologyandhowthenewshas
beenreportedovertheyears,theycontinuetobenumberoneinnewsbroadcasting.
Communicatingtothepubliccanbepresentedinmanyways,thechangesthatbroadcast
journalismthroughtheyearsaremagnificentnotonlyhasittaughtpeoplemore,butithas
improvedinitsultimategoalofprovidingthepublicwithnewsinawaytheyenjoyit.
