    AlthoughtheIndianstateagencyNTPChasbeenbarredfromconstructingpowerprojectstoprotectsmall
    forestsandarablelandinitscountry,itisimplementingahugepowerplantatBagerhatsRampalwhichwould
    harmtheBangladeshpartoftheSundarbans,aUnescoWorldHeritageSite,conservationistssaidyesterday.
    AnIndiandelegationvisitedtheprojectareaonApril2andhasagainbeentryingtojustifytheprojectby
    providingfalseinformation,apressstatementissuedbytheNationalCommitteeforProtectionofOilGasand
    MineralResource,ElectricitySectorandPortssaid.
    CommitteeConvenerSheikhMuhammadShahidullahandMemberSecretaryAnuMuhammadinthejoint
    statementsaid:WeknowthattheIndianNationalGreenTribunalonMarch13suspendedtheenvironmental
    clearancefortheNTPCspowerplantprojectinKarnataka.ThecourtsaidtheNTPCgavefalseandambiguous
    informationabouttheprojectland,pollution,securedclearancebeforeformulatingguidelinesoncompensation
    andrehabilitationandalsoignoredthelocalsopinions.
    ThecommitteesaidirregularitiescentringtheRampalplantweremoreseverewhentheNTPC(National
    ThermalPowerCorporation)alsoconcealedinformation.
    CriticisingtheBangladeshgovernmentforimplementingthe1320MWcoalbasedpowerprojecthurriedly,the
    committeeleadersurgedtheUnescototakeeffectivemeasuresagainstthescheme.
    TheSundarbansmangroveforestactsasashieldforthemillionsofcoastalpeopleduringcyclones,theysaid
    whileurgingthegovernmenttoshelvetheprojectasitwouldbedevastatingfortheforest.
    TheplatformsaidanantiIndiasentimentwasalreadystronginBangladeshbecauseoftheneighbours
    unilateraldecisionsontheFarakkaBarrage,sharingofTeestawaterandoverallenvironmentaldegradation.
    IturgedtheIndiangovernmenttocanceltheprojectimmediatelyifyoudonotwantthesentimenttobecome
    worse.
    PrimeMinisterSheikhHasinainauguratedconstructionoftheplantinOctoberlastyear.
