Five Day Lesson Plan
Probability and Statistics (50 mins)

STANDARD:
3.17

The student will

a) collect and organize data, using observations, measurements, surveys, or experiments;
b) construct a line plot, a picture graph, or a bar graph to represent the data; and
c) read and interpret the data represented in line plots, bar graphs, and picture graphs and write
a sentence analyzing the data.

3.18

The student will investigate and describe the concept of probability as chance and list possible
results of a given situation.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(s)/Big Idea:

1. Define probability as the chance that an event will happen.
2. Identify the degree of likelihood of an outcome occurring using terms such as impossible, unlikely, as likely
as, equally likely, likely, and certain.
3. Construct a line plot, picture graph, or bar graph of collected data.
4. Create different combinations for data.
RATIONALE: All students should investigate, understand, and apply basic concepts of probability and
Understand that probability is the chance of an event happening. Students also needs to know how to
collect and graph data.

OBJECTIVE:
Today we willlearn about probability-the chance an event happening.
So you canknow how to identify the degree of likelihood of an outcome occurring.

Ill know you have it whenyou can use the correct terms, and create different combinations with
data (4/5 times).

INTRODUCTIO
N
(HOOK)
Create anchor chart with the following terms: certain, likely, unlikely, equally likely,
impossible.

PROCEDURES

Day 1:

Explain that probability is the chance that an event will happen. Refer to anchor chart

for the following terms: certain, likely, unlikely, equally likely, impossible.
Show chance and probability cards.
Students will be divided into 5 groups and given a term on an index card. The group
must create an example to of the given term. (Ex: certain-It is certain the sun will rise
today.)
Complete slides 1-6 on SMARTBoard activity.
TSW complete worksheet 24.1 for a grade.

Day 2:
TSW complete a quick check1-complete spring garden probability, 2-complete cut and paste sort, 3-scoot with
teacher

Day 3:

Review terms: certain, likely, unlikely, equally likely, impossible.

Complete slides 7-9 on SMARTBoard activity.
TSW complete the M&M activity (give students a bag with 10 M&Ms).
TSW complete Exploring Probability-p 106 for a grade.

Day 4:
TSW complete probability scoot.
Create your own bar graph with students to show the data from M&M activity.
TSW then create their own bar graph for their M&M data and color it.

Day 5:
Probability practice review with white boards.
Complete slides 11-14 on SMARTBoard activity.
TSW complete ice cream combinations sheet. (Keep so students can create a

to complete during a lesson. Completion of some activities at small group time.
