Opening Hook/Warm Up:


I will give each student a quarter and a dollar bill
and ask them what they think we will be learning
about.

including Stephen F. Austin, George
Washington, Christopher Columbus, and Jos
Antonio Navarro, who helped to shape the state

Objective: Student Friendly:
Today we will learn about George Washington and
why he is important.

Big Understanding:
It is important to know the great contributions George Washington made to our nation and how they still
affect us.
Summative Assessment Evidence:
Students will complete a timeline about the life of George Washington that will be completed independently.
The students will color, cut, and glue the 4 events in the correct order.

Can someone please identify a fact we have learned about George Washington?
Who wants to explain to me why they think George Washington is important?
Lets illustrate on the timeline George Washingtons life.

Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:


We will start by all sitting down on the rug.
I will give students the hook and then tell them the objective of the day.
Then we will read a small book and start a class discussion, during this time students will be
raising hands and be actively engaged.
From that students will be grouped randomly and go to their assigned table.
Students will have a coloring sheet and materials for the G.W craft will be gathered by the
materials person.
Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO: I will show the class how to create the George Washington Craft.
First I will have all the materials at hand. I will tell students to start off by placing the head on the red
sheet of paper then glue the googly eyes on the head and afterwards to draw his mouth. Then I will tell
students to glue his hat on and place the star in the middle of the hat. After that I will show students how
to place the cotton balls around the head to resemble hair. Lastly I will tell students to attach the body
and handkerchief.
Guided Practice: WE DO: After reading the class the book about George Washington I will engage
students in a class discussion where we both will come up with George Washington facts. I will write
these down on a big piece of chart paper. Afterwards, we will watch a short video about George

Washington on the BrainPop website.


CFU (Checking for understanding): I will ask students to show me thumbs up/down throughout
the lesson to check for understanding. I will also question students to monitor understanding.
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students): After discussing the life and contributions
of George Washington students will complete a timeline of his life. Students will color the worksheet, cut
it, and glue it in the correct order. This will be done in class but if not finished during class it will be sent
home as homework.
Ending, Summary / Reflection:
At the end of the lesson I will ask each student to tell me a fact about George Washington and why
they think he is important. I will also ask student id they know someone important in our community
and what that person has done for our community/school.
Materials / Resources: blue construction paper, tan construction paper, white paper stars, googly eyes,
cotton balls, IP timeline worksheet, George Washington Color by Number worksheet, George Washington
childrens book, colors, scissors, glue, pencils, quarters, dollar bills, George Washington poster board,
computer
Grouping Patterns: During the book reading the whole class will sit as a group on the reading rug. For
the coloring by number worksheet and the George Washington craft students will work in their table
teams.
Technology: I will show students a short video about George Washington on BrainPop.
