Abstract
Rapid urbanization increases the complexity of urban problems, encoraging cities to find a new way in
managing their urban areas. One of the methods to solve the problems is to build a smart city. Indonesia is
also experiencing the same problems, therefore smart city concepts become one of many solutions Indonesia
may adopt.
This paper suggest Indonesia to prepare smart cities for the future of its urban areas. The preparation
includes knowledge building through a research agenda on smart city. Proposed research agenda in this
paper consists of four research areas: (1) research on cyberculture in Indonesia, (2) research on cyberspace,
cybercity and cyber-region, (3) research on technologies supporting smart city, and (4) research on smart
city modelling applied to Indonesia. The research agenda is multidisciplinair in nature; it needs
collaboration among researcher from many fields. This paper proposes once every two years we conduct a
national seminar on smart city in Indonesia to share research findings.
