AcompanyearnstheADASealforitsproductbyprovidingevidencethatmeetstheADAcriteriafor
safetyandefficacy.TheADACouncilonScientificAffairscarefullyevaluatestheevidenceaccordingto
theGuidelinesforParticipationintheADAsSealofAcceptanceProgramandanyindividualproduct
guidelinesiftheyexist.Inaddition,theADACouncilhasadoptedaspecificguidelineforthisproduct
categorycalledSugarFreeChewingGumstoHelpReducePreventCavities.Therearetwowaysa
sugarfreechewinggumcandemonstrateitmeetstheADAGuidelines:
throughClinicalStudies
usingSurrogateTests
Botharevalidforshowingproductsafetyandefficacy.Theyaredescribedbelow.
ClinicalStudies:OnewaysugarfreegumsthathelppreventandreducecavitiescanearntheSealis

bybeingusedinclinicalstudies.Theclinicalstudiescompareactualreductionsincavitiesbetweentwo
groupsoftestssubjects.Thefirstgroupchewedgumthesecondgroupdidnot.Inthesetypesof
studies,theresultsneedtoshowthatthegroupchewingthegumdevelopedsignificantlyfewercavities
thanthenonchewinggroup.SeminalclinicalstudieswereperformedbytheWrigleyCorporation.1
Thosestudiesdemonstratedthatchildrenwhochewedsugarfreegumfor20minutes,3timesaday
followingmealshadsignificantlyfewercavitiesthanchildrenwhodidnotchewsugarfreegum.

SurrogateTests:Anothervalidmethodthatcanbeusedtoestablishefficacyofsugarfreegumsfor
helpingtoreducedecayissurrogatetests.Thesetestsmeasuresurrogatesthathavebeenshownto
correlatewiththedevelopmentofcavities.Forsugarfreegums,thesesurrogatetestsincludeeffecton
salivaryflow(i.e.howmuchsalivaisproducedbychewinggum),effectonsalivarypH(i.e.ameasureof
salivaacidity)andtheabilityofsalviatoremineralizeteeth(i.e.makethemmoreresistanttotooth
decay).Welldesignedsurrogatetestsaremuchquickerandeasiertodothanclinicalstudies,butare
justasgoodatshowingproducteffectiveness.ThesurrogatetestsforAcceptanceofsugarfreegums
aredetailedintheADAGuidelinesforSugarFreeGumstoHelpReduce/PreventCavities(2010).
AcceptanceofExtraSugarfreeGumwasawardedbasedontheresultsofclinicalstudiesgiveninthe
ADAGuidelinesforSugarFreeGumstoHelpReduce/PreventCavitiestoearntheADASealof
Acceptance.
