STEP 2 EVALUATION

CRITERIA

OPTION 1 LSRD PROPOSED

ALTERNATIVE
JOINT OPERATIONS CORRIDOR ALONG UPRR AUSTIN
SUB W/DEVELOPMENT OF NEW FREIGHT CORRIDOR

OPTION 2 NEW PASSENGER

CORRIDOR PARALLEL TO UPRR AUSTIN SUB
A new corridor would be developed parallel to and completely
separated from the existing UPRR Austin Sub between Taylor and
San Antonio. Complete separation of freight and passenger rail traffic
would be achieved either through appropriate spacing or use of a
barrier. Previously identified station locations would be used to the
extent possible.

OPTION 2 NEW PASSENGER

CORRIDOR PARALLEL TO UPRR AUSTIN SUB
2 tracks spaced 15-feet apart
55-foot wide right-of-way may vary depending on terrain;
retaining walls could be used in some areas to minimize
right-of-way width
Boarding platform accessible via bridge from station and parking
area located outside of right-of-way
Nearest freight and passenger tracks would be a minimum
of 50-feet on center (A)
In areas where space is limited and the 50-foot on center
minimum cannot be achieved, a barrier/crash wall would
be constructed (B)

OPTION 3 I-35 CORRIDOR

I-35 would serve as the spine for this option with proposed passenger
rail service infrastructure located within and/or parallel to the existing
I-35 right-of-way. Consideration will be given to elevated, at-grade
and tunnel segments. In Austin, consideration will be given to locating
passenger rail service within the existing MoKan, MoPAC, Capital
Metro and/or SH 130/SH 45 corridors.

At-Grade Options
2 tracks spaced 15-feet apart
35-foot wide track bed
(may vary), retaining walls
to minimize footprint, where
feasible
Located within the median or
outside and adjacent to
travel lanes or frontage road
Boarding platform accessible
via bridge, tunnel, or at-
grade from station located
outside or adjacent to
right-of-way, depending
on location

Tunnel Option

In areas where right-of-way

is limited, consideration
will be given to underground
sections
Platforms/stations would be
accessed via stairs, elevators,

location

OPTION 3 I-35 CORRIDOR

Proposed passenger
rail facilities

MoKan Corridor
2 tracks spaced 15-feet apart
Variable width track bed,
depending on terrain
Boarding platform accessible
via at-grade or bridge from
station and parking located
adjacent to right-of-way
May require relocation
of roadway or other
improvements within
existing MoKan right-of-way

Boarding platform
accessible via at-grade or
bridge from station and
parking located adjacent
to right-of-way
Additional track may be
needed in some locations to
support joint operations

OPTION 4 SH 130 CORRIDOR

SH 130 would serve as the spine for this option with proposed
passenger rail service infrastructure located within the median,
within the right-of-way outside of the travel lanes and frontage
roads, and/or within dedicated right-of-way parallel to the existing
SH 130 right-of-way. Consideration would be given to elevated
and at-grade segments.

to the right-of-way, depending on location

OPTION 5 I-35 OR PARALLEL

TO UPRR AUSTIN SUB
W/MULTI-MODAL SERVICE
COMPONENTS IN AUSTIN
AND SAN ANTONIO
The primary passenger rail service corridor would be located along
I-35 and/or parallel to the UPRR Austin Sub between Stassney Lane
(Austin) and Loop 1604 (San Antonio). Multi-modal connections
developed through a cooperative effort with Capital Metro and VIA
would connect with the passenger rail system to provide accessibility
to local destinations via bus, urban rail, streetcar and/or other local
transit options.
