First Grade Guided Reading Groups


Standards
RF.1.3, RF.1.3.g, RI.1.3, RF.1.3.b, L.1.4.b
Objective
Students will use informational text to decode words, segment
phonemes, describe connections between events, build words with
variant vowels, and use and identify suffixes.
Materials
Apples from Farm to Table (Orange = Approaching Level, Blue = On
Level, Green = Beyond Level)
Procedures
1. Cover book genre label Read title and guess genre based on clues.
Identify how we know.
2. Picture walk through the book. Make predictions as to what the book
will tell us.
3. Read through the book either together (Orange Group) or taking turns
(Blue & Green Groups) stopping to discuss as needed.
4. After reading have students retell the story in their own words in the
correct sequence giving each child a turn. Encourage rereading
and looking back at the text to find the answers.
5. Answer the text evidence questions to practice finding answers from
the text to revisit the sequence of the story in another way and the
genre.

2. Look through A Dairy Treat and predict what this informational text is
about
3. Read A Dairy Treat together or in turns
4. Point out the information in the chart: Could we have a chart like that
for the Apples from Farm to Table text?
5. Discuss "Make Connections"
6. Make chart on white boards of "Focus on Social Studies"
7. Practice HF words
