Standard 2

9/24/2015-9/25/2015 (3 hours):
Instructional Coach (Classroom Management Strategies): After observing the
social studies teacher, we met to go over some of the different things I noticed in her
class. I made sure to find both positives as well as areas we could work on to make her
more effective. One of our first issues to help with classroom management was helping
her make a seating chart and set the class up where the students could utilize
collaborative groups as well be able to work independently if needed. At her prior
school, she taught a different subject and had smaller classes. Not only was she having to
learn a new curriculum, but she had to adjust to a larger class as well. My main goal was
to help her get her classrooms organized and get procedures in place so she wasnt feeling
so frustrated and had time to focus on the curriculum. As Standard 2 states, I was trying
to assist her to be a high quality teacher in her new setting.

Instructional Coach (Classroom Management Strategies): During this day of
instructional coaching, the teacher was struggling and was upset b/c she felt when she
was losing control because the students were entering the room and would talk rather
than working on the warm up that was posted. We talked about procedures and students
needed to know what was expected of them every day. Because she did not have a warm
up every day, we needed to have a procedure for students when they first entered the
classroom. We talked about the planners and the students coming in and writing their
objective should be the first thing. Its a way to get the students in their desk when they
first enter. The main point we discussed was making sure to follow through and do it
every day. The following day I went and modeled it for her. She told them to write it, and
we had a student go around initialing it while she was able to take roll and get the lesson
started. I believe it helped ease her frustrations. Its not the one time fix, but at least it
was a start as well as a process she should have already been doing due to our AVID
strategies.

TNT Mentee Observation: TNT (teachers need teachers) is a program that
mentors first year teachers their first and second year of teaching. My Mentee and I took
half a day to observe teachers at two other campuses. I emailed the teacher as well as
their administrator and scheduled the observations. My mentee teaches 6th grade math, so
I found other 6th grade math teachers that she could observe different strategies they were
utilizing. The best way for one to become an effective and high quality teacher is to learn
from others. After each observation, we scheduled time where she and the other teacher
could talk one on one and answer questions she had. This was a great experience because
she was able to not only find fun ways to bring technology to the classroom, but she was
able to observe some great classroom management techniques, which I think is
something that almost all first year teachers struggle with.

Constructional Coach/Stations: My mentee was wanting to incorporate more

cooperative groups in her lessons. We put together an activity that incorporated different
stations that utilized activities and technology. One way to have a high effective teacher
is to be able and willing to incorporate different ways for students to learn. Students need
to have the opportunity to learn in different ways. No one wants to sit in their desk the
entire time and listen to a lecture. After we organized the activity and I helped her
implement it her first period, she had great success. She saw how it put the learning back
on the students. They were given the chance to discover and learn the material utilizing
hands on activities with their peers. We talked about how it takes a little more planning,
but it does make it for a better day for not only the teacher, but more importantly the
student.

Classroom Observation/ Strategies for classroom management: During this
day, I observed a teacher that was having issues with student behavior in a particular class
period. When observing her class, I noticed there was way too much down time between
activities where the students were having the opportunity to get off task. The teacher and
I had a great discussion that afternoon and talked about transitioning between activities;
for example, as the students are working on their warm up, that is the time to be checking
roll and passing out papers. That way when are ready to begin the lesson they have
everything they need at the desk and are ready to go.

Board Meeting (rezoning): I attended the Board Meeting along with my
principal. One of our teachers is a published author and was being recognized by the
board. I put this under this standard because of the high-quality teacher in every
classroom. Not only is she a high-quality teacher, but her book is about loving every
child and how to be a better teacher. After her presentation, I stayed for the remainder of
the meeting to hear the controversial discussion about rezoning bus routes for some of the
ESL students. Our campus was affected by this last year when the rezoning increased her
SPED and ESL numbers to being almost 1/3 of our population. Because of this, I
understood why campuses were concerned. A petition was signed and was approved by
the board not to allow it to occur.
3/4/2016 (2 hours)
TNT Mentor Observation: I arranged for my mentee to go off campus and
observe different 6th grade math teachers around the district. We spent the morning
competing the observations, and the afternoon we met and reflected on her thoughts. It
was a successful day because she was able to meet other teachers as well as learn some
new strategies and techniques to use in her classroom. We talked about the importance of
networking so that she could share ideas. We also talked about classroom management
techniques as well as increase technology use in her classroom. In order to be an
effective teacher, it is important to implement all of these. So far, she is doing a great job
of this. This was just another way of learning new techniques and strategies.

TELPAS Training: I assisted my assistant principal in conducting the training
for TELPAS testing. We set up the PowerPoint, made copies of training material and
emailed the specific staff members that needed to attend. We offered the training
throughout the week in both the morning and the afternoon so it gave teachers and staff
amble opportunity to attend. I attached this to standard 2 because in order to be a highquality teacher, you must be trained over all the policies and procedures when it comes to
testing.
3/22/2016 (2 hours)
STAAR Training: Once again I assisted the assistant principal in preparing for
the STAAR training for the staff. This particular training was very important because it
was all about testing security. This is a huge issue and teachers need to see the
importance and how one could lose their certification if anything is jeopardized. This
training was offered in both the mornings and the afternoons to give teachers availability
to come. My role was to send out the emails, copy training materials and pass out
materials when staff members arrived. STAAR is one of the largest responsibilities on a
teacher at this time of the year. I put this in standard 1 because it is important for teachers
to be well informed and trained in order to be a high-quality teacher.
3/23/2016-3/24/2016 (6 hours)
STAAR Organization: Throughout these two days, I would work with the
administration staff to help organize and set up the campus for STAAR testing. My
primary role was with the math department. I had to locate all the calculators in the
building and reset them to be in testing mode. This was quite an ordeal because these
new calculators are on a server and linked to individual teachers. I made a spreadsheet of
which calculators each teacher had and to which specific location they would go to,
Because the students needed them for practice, I was not able pick them all up and reset
them until the last day. I am so glad I was in charge of that role, because not only were
the calculators cleared and ready to go, but now we have a system in place that is
organized and effective. I put this in standard 2 because in order to have a high-quality
teacher, they must have the tools needed to have their students be successful.
3/29/2016 (2 hours)
STAAR Organization: Today was the first round of STAAR testing for 8th grade.
I arrived early to distribute all the calculators to the specific teachers. I arranged for a
teacher to be floating if any problems were to arise with a calculator during testing. The
process went very smooth. We did not experience and problems witch was great, because
this was the first year we used the new TI Inspire calculators. At the end of testing I
collected them and dispersed them back to there proper location. At the end of the day,
my principal emailed me and said that she was so nervous about the calculators, but
because of the organization and the implementation of them it was a smooth process.
