Essential Question: How do humans affect endangered marine populations?
Working Thesis: Humans negatively affect endangered marine life by overfishing and polluting
our waters.
Refined Thesis: Humans negatively affect endangered marine life by overfishing and polluting,
but positively affect marine life by initiating well thought out policies and helpful organizations.

This is a very interesting book that could help build and refute my thesis because in the
book each article that claims something humans do is dangerous or harmful to our oceans is
followed by an opposing article that explains why it wouldnt be. This book explains different
activities humans do that affect our oceans and has different articles that explain why these
activities do or do not harm the oceans and marine life. The book also talks about ocean policies
and the opposing viewpoints about many different policies. The book also explains strategies that
can promote sustainable fishing and also has a chapter on the impact of human activities on
marine mammals.

This article explains different types of policies and treaties that the United States and
many other countries have set in place to help protect Earths oceans. The article talks about
navigation rights, overexploited fisheries, territorial sea limit, and the United Nations. It explains
what these policies are, what they mean, how they affect different countries, and how they affect
marine life. The article also goes into details about the history of ocean policies and what
different organizations have done to help protect the planets oceans. Lastly, the article explains
ocean policies today, explaining what President Obama has done recently and what George Bush
did during his presidency. The article can help build my thesis by explaining new and old ocean
policies and describe different acts organizations have done to protects the worlds oceans.

Vogel, Carole Garbuny. Human Impact. New York: F. Watts, 2003. Print.
This book tells about our planets oceans and the impact humans have on them. It talks
about oil spills that have occurred throughout different oceans and how difficult of a process it is
to clean up. This book also tells about toxic algae and how it affects ocean populations. Vogel
also writes about different diseases certain aquatic life now has because of humans. She also
explains how sewage pollutes water especially when there arent any filtration systems. This
book also talks about overfishing and how we need fish farms to keep populations alive. The
book also goes into the relationship between weather and climate, the greenhouse effect, and
seafloor spreading. Last, but not least, the book talks about overpopulation and how it affects
marine life. This book can help build the thesis because it gives many facts and examples of
human impact in our planets oceans.
