Common Greetings and Phrases
Instructional Objective: Students will be able to understand common greetings and phrases in
Spanish and translate them from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
Learning Standards for Languages Other than English
Modern Languages
Standard 1: Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.
2. Reading and writing are used in languages other than English for the purposes of socializing,
providing and acquiring information, expressing personal feelings and opinions, and getting
others to adopt a course of action.
Indicator: This will be evident once students write a brief conversation with a partner using the
greetings and phrases vocabulary.
Standard 2: Cultural Understanding
1. Effective communication involves meanings that go beyond words and require an
understanding of perceptions, gestures, folklore, and family and community dynamics. All of
these elements can affect whether and how well a message is received.
Indicator: This will be evident once students write a brief conversation with a partner using the
greetings and phrases vocabulary and recite it in small groups.
Motivation: Ask students if they have ever heard any greetings or common phrases in Spanish.

Strategies:
Activating Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson, students have been exposed to many of these
terms without realizing. Ask the students if they know of any Spanish words that English
speakers have adopted? Do you see or hear any Spanish through media?
Direct Instruction- The teacher will also repeat the phrases to show the correct pronunciation.
Adaptations:
For diverse learners:
Background knowledge: Students may have heard Spanish Spoken in their native country or it
may be their first language. Content Objective: Students will be able to comprehend some
greetings and phrases and know the equivalent in their native language.

Language Objectives:
Students will listen to the pronunciation and definitions of new vocabulary terms.
Students will read the vocabulary terms aloud.
Students will write a dialogue with a partner.
Students will orally collaborate with peers and present their dialogue.
Motivation: Students will be asked what other languages theyve heard spoken in their native
country.
Materials: Translations of new vocabulary terms and definitions will be available to students in
their native language.

Procedure:
1. Pass out vocabulary worksheets
2. Have students take turns reading each vocabulary term in and copying in the space
provided in the worksheet.
3. Show students the Qu Onda App and how to get to the How are you Lesson.
4. Have students use the App Qu Onda Spanish on their device to practice the How are
you Lesson.
5. Have students get into pairs and create a conversation using at least three utterances
per person.
6. Divide the class in half and have each group share their dialogue.
Informal Assessment/ Closure: Have each student take the Google Forms quiz found on the
class website.
Independent Practice and Follow Up: Students will be encouraged to familiarize themselves
with common greetings and phrases using the links and apps found on the class website.
