BeforeClassPreparation
1.Equipment
Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethateachstudenthasaccesstoeitheracomputerordevicein
a1:1ratioasmuchoftheinitialworkistobedoneindividually.Thismayrequiresigningout
thecomputerlabortechnologycartinatimelymannerfollowingtheschoolssignoutpolicy.
Theteacherwillalsoneedtomakesurethatallofthedevices/computersarefullychargedin
orderforstudentstohaveadequatepowerduringclasstime.
2.Handouts
Theteacherwillgiveeachstudentacopyoftherubricsothattheyknowthegoaland
expectationsoftheassignment.Therubricwillalsoguideandencouragetheirworkandeffortin
creatingthedigitalstory.Studentswillalsoreceiveacopyofthebibliographygraphic
organizer.Thiswillhelpthemwhentheyarefindingresearchabouttheirhistoricalfigures.This
willhelpthemwhenwritingtheirresearchpaperinGoogleDocs.
Throughoutthelesson,studentswillbereceivingmultipledifferenthandouts.Onday3and4,
studentswillreceiveastoryboardtemplatehandoutthatwillhelpthemplanontheirdigitalstory
beforetheycreateit.Theywillreceivea321exitticketonDay4thatwillhelptheteacher
knowwhatstudentsarefindingwiththeirresearchandquestionsstudentsstillhave.Students
willreceiveapeerreviewchecklistonday5thatwillassistwhenreviewingtheirpartnerswork.
3.Connectivity
Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethattheapplicablewebsitesneededfortheassignmentare
workingforthedayeachdaybeforestudentsarrivetoclass.Theteacherwillalsoneedtomake
surethateachindividualdeviceisnotexperiencinganytechnicaldifficultiesaccessingtheserver
orInternetsignal.

Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethathis/herowncomputerisrunningandreadytogo,

choicewiththeteacher,theywillbeallowedtostartresearchingaftertheassignmentpreview.
(10Minutes)Theteacherpreviewstheassignmentfortheclassshowinganexamplestoryhe/she
hasalreadycreated.Theteacherwillgivestudentsallacopyoftherubricthatwillbeusedto
gradetheirdigitalstories.Therubricswillguidestudentsonwhatinformationtheyneedto
includeintheirdigitalstories.Theteacherwillansweranyquestionsthestudentsmighthave
abouttheassignment.
(30Minutes)Studentsuseclasstimetoresearchthehistoricalfiguretheyhavechosen.Theywill
compiletheirresearchonthegraphicorganizerthathasbeenhandedout.
(5Minutes)Theteacherwillwrapuptheclassperiodwithpreviewingwhatthenextdaywill
looklike.Thenthethirdday,studentswillbecreatingtheirdigitalstoriesinamediaformatof
theirchoice.
Day2:
(55Minutes)Studentswilltaketimetofinishthegraphicorganizerfromthedaybefore.
Oncethestudentsaredonewiththegraphicorganizer,theymaystarttotypeuptheirscriptfor
theirdigitalstoryinGoogleDocs.
Day3and4:
(50Minutes)Studentswilltaketimetofinishtypinguptheirscriptfortheirdigitalstoryin
GoogleDocs.Withthisinformation,theywilldraftthestoryabouttheirhistoricalfigureby
fillingintheStoryboardTemplate(seeSupplementalLessonMaterialsattheendofthelesson
plan).Thestoryboardwillallowstudentstobreakdownthestorycreatingprocessandplantheir
individualslidesfortheirpresentationbeforetheybeginusingthepresentationsoftware.The
completedStoryboardTemplatewillbereferredtoasdraftsthroughouttheremainderofthe
project.
(5Minutes)Studentswilltaketimetocompletethe321ExitCard.Thiswillbeturnedinatthat
endofDay4.
Day5:
(55Minutes)Studentswillworkinpairspreselectedbytheteacher.Thepairswilllookateach
othersbrainstorminggraphicorganizers,storyboardtemplateandresearchpaperonGoogle
Docs.Thepairswillprovidefeedbacktoeachother.ThepairswillusetheChecklist(See

presentationswillbesharedasdigitalmovies.EachstudentwillbeusingScreencastoMatic
screencastingprogramsoftwareandthesedigitalfileshavebeendownloadedandsharedwiththe
teacherandclassmatesonSeeSaw.Theteacher,then,canpullthepresentationupthrough
SeeSawandshowonaprojectedscreenorSmartBoard.
Thecompletedprojectwillbeevaluatedusingbytherubricthatisattachedabove.The
teacherwillevaluatetheindividualprojectsastheyareplayedforthewholeclass.
