Utahs fight to Same-sex

marriage
A Multi Genre project
By
JONAH ROSENBERG

Dear reader,

I am writing to you about a Thing that I feel very passionate about,

Marriage equality. I feel passionate about this because I believe
that all people are created equal. People shouldn't be treated
differently based on gender, race, or sexual identity. I recently
traveled to Washington, D.C. And advocated for equality, I talked
about anti-discrimination acts in terms of employment and
housing. When I talked to our senators they all were against such
legislation because all they care about is the public image not
what is right in life. I support that legislation because it's right.
Everyone is equal no matter what the GOP say. Even though I'm
not gay, gay people are EQUAL IN EVERY WAY!

The gay marriage battle in Utah has
gone on for a long time now, but in 2013
three same sex couples challenged Utahs
ban on same-sex marriage. In the case
Kitchen v. Herbert, these couples filed a
lawsuit against the state of Utah and
made Governor Gary Herbert and his
team of lawyers the defendants. The U.S.
District Court for the district of Utah said
that the states ban on same-sex
marriage was not constitutional in
December of 2013. Of course the
Republican government who wouldnt
dare think for themselves or have morals,
filed an appeal with The Tenth Circuit
Court of Appeals. In June of 2014, The
Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals found the
decision of the district court to be truthful
and found that Utahs same-sex marriage

ban was unconstitutional, and in October

of 2014, gay marriage became Legal.
LOVE IS FREE
LOVE IS TRUE
LOVE IS CONSENSUAL BETWEEN ME AND YOU
LOVE IS HERE
LOVE IS THERE
LOVE IS WHEN YOU CARE
LOVE IS HARD TO DESCRIBE
LOVE IS A STATE OF MIND
LOVE IS WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE
LOVE IS NOT DEFINDED BY THE GOP
LOVE IS HARD YET SO SOFT
LOVE IS GAINED AND LOST
LOVE IS GENDERLESS
LOVE IS BETWEEN PEOPLE WHO LOVE EACH OTHER, WHY SOULD THAT BE TAKEN AWAY

ME: Hi, my partner and I would like to get a marriage license

HIM:

We dont offer them to people like you

ME: Its because Im a ginger eh?

HIM:

No. Its because youre gay

ME: So? What does who I love matter in this situation.

HIM:

I dont want to offer you a marriage certificate, it

goes against my religion. People like you dont deserve
one.

ME: Is that so may I ask why?

HIM:

We rely on mostly made up history where we

doctrine it so we can do what we want. It clearly states in
the holy bible, that you cant sleep with another man.

ME: It also states that you can whip your women as much as
you want one verse later. You dont seem to be following that
one.

HIM:

We like to pick and choose what we like to follow

ME: So theres no chance of getting married today

HIM:

No. gets your gay self out of my office. Gooday.

I took this at the

parade in 2013

Last Year Utah pride Parade

u

Stepping right, left, right, left,

our steady march is on time like the beating of a couples
heartbeat who can finally say legally "I do" thousands of
people cheering on both sides of the street. Each and
every face different but United in their goal for equality for
all. The pavement underneath our feet thumped with all of
our steps. My joy beamed out of me like the sun's rays. I
felt proud to be representing something that I believe
wholeheartedly in. The massive hundred foot flag that we
were carrying was flexing in the vast amount of currency
that the patrons were generously donating to the Utah
Pride Can Center. We continue to march on we move

faster and faster smiles beaming to i our faces. I'm not
