ABSTRACT

This study sought to estimate the influence of types of vehicles on fatal accident rate
in NCR. Logistic regression was applied to accident-related data collected from Land
Transportation Office records in order to examine the contribution of several variables to
accident severity. A total of 24109 subjects involved in serious accidents were sampled using
STATA. Accident severity (the dependent variable) in this study is a dichotomous variable
with two categories, fatal and non-fatal. A logistic regression approach was found suitable of
ten independent variables obtained from the secondary resource collected, seven were found
most signicantly associated with accident severity, namely, motorcycle, motor tricycle, car,
jeepney, taxi/fx, truck, train. The 130 models made after initial simulation processes are
used to determine what method is better and more reliable. The same results were given
when Stepwise Regression is applied. Thus, to minimize the process, stepwise regression is
more suitable process. Stepwise regression is a modication of the forward selection so that
after each step in which a variable was added, all candidate variables in the model are
checked to see if their signicance has been reduced below the specied tolerance level. The
researchers hereby conclude that stepwise regression is better than binary logistic regression
in identifying the fatal accident rate of the types of vehicles in NCR.
