Middle School Science with Ms.

Kennedy & Ms. Savage: Solid, Liquid, &

Gas
Understanding Goals:
Students will understand that the world around us, although appearing in different forms (solid, liquid,
gas, and plasma) is composed of matter.
Knowledge Goals:
Terms: Matter, solid, liquid, gas
Skills Goals:
1.0 Identifying real world examples for each state of matter.
2.0 Analyze, compare, and contrast the properties of solid, liquid, and gas.
Directions: This assignment is designed to examine the properties of solid, liquid, and gases and
how they compare. Below are multiple approaches to this examination. This task will be used to
reinforce learned content from the previous lesson. Students may choose the task that is most
appealing to them. Your goal is to choose ONE of the tasks below to complete. After you choose a
task, more details on an index card will be passed out. You can work alone or with others.
Songwriter:
An educational website has hired you to (1)
choose a popular tune that would appeal to
middle schoolers and (2) create accompanying
lyrics that would help students understand ALL
differences between solid, liquid, and
gases(Musical-Rhythmic).

Actor:
Choreograph and act out body movements that
will help students understand the differences
between solid, liquid, and gases (BodilyKinesthetic).

Writer:
Write a story about a superhero who can
transform into a solid, liquid, and gas. Since
superheros help others, explain what super
power your superhero has in each state of
matter and how that super power will help
others.
(Verbal-Linguistic).

Designer:
Design and create a book or magazine cover
that visually demonstrates the differences
between solid, liquid, and gases and at the same
time entice readers to buy it (Visual-Spatial).

opportunity to learn the characteristics in a different way as well as have various ways to remember
the information that appeals to diverse learning styles (Doubet & Hockett, 2015).
