Essential III
Essential III in the baccalaureate education program provides the foundation for a systematic
approach to study a current theory and apply a scientific procedure for the purpose to develop,
translate and disseminate the findings to colleagues and other healthcare professional. The
fundamental building block ensures a cohesive, organized approach to research. The information
obtained must be verified and able to be reproduced by others. The Essential spurs the
professional nurse to reach out beyond the confines of their practice and work collaboratively.
The Exemplar

The question: Will consistency in education and training for the RN team on the Medical
Surgical Unit result in more timely blood draws to optimize patient treatment. The reason I
chose this topic was because of an interest to see if all of the RNs on our unit were competent to
draw blood would it improve our patients care, safety and satisfaction. It is important to
research this idea to see if this small change could positively affect the overall outcome. The
research provided some excellent recommendations. One recommendation was hand washing.
It was a surprise to me, yet extremely pertinent, to ensure the possibility of an accurate blood
draw one must practice good hand hygiene.

Reflection

The combination of the Evidenced-Based Practice course and the AACN Essential III has
showed the importance in the professional practice of healthcare providers to continue
educational pursuits for a lifetime. The question starts the process as stated in Essential III,
demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the research process and models for

applying evidence to clinical practice. (Nursing, 2008, p. 16) The textbook provided an
excellent resource for the professional nurse to research the question. (Schmidt & Brown, 2015)
Research does not take place in a box. Research is integrative, collaborative, ethical and to be
shared. Essential III states, collaborate in collection, documentation, and dissemination of
evidence. (Nursing, 2008, p.16) In the ever changing world we live in, it is important that each
professional helps pass the torch of our research and discoveries to those around us and beyond.
