Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that gives advice to
women, men and teens on contraception, family planning, and reproductive
problems. Planned Parenthood is associated with the war on pro-life and prochoice, and the issues to defund them. People look at these issues as a
reflection on Planned Parenthood and they overlook all the services that the
clinic provides. This paper is to inform people about all the different services
Planned Parenthood provides for women, men, and teens, and it will be
discussing the debate on defunding Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parent has many services they provide. One of their services
are cancer screening for women and men. For women, they provide cervical
cancer screening, breast cancer screening, and ovarian cancer screening.
They also provide information for patients to help prevent cervical cancer.
For men they have testicular cancer screening (Planned Parenthood
Federation of America Inc, 2014). Cancer screening and prevention make up
9% of the services that Planned Parenthood provide. Emily Canal said that

nearly 500,000 breast exams were given by Planned Parenthood in 2013 .

(Canal, 2015) Planned Parenthoods cancer screening saved nearly 88,000
lives between 2012 and 2013. (Canal, 2015)
Another service provided by Planned Parenthood is contraception and
emergency contraception, including condoms, patches, pills, shots, implants,
and they also have vasectomies for males. All the procedures and shots are
done in their clinics by a licensed professional. Emergency contraptions or
the morning after pill are also provided at Planned Parenthood for women
in need of it. (Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc, 2014)
Contraptions make up 34% of the services provided at Planned Parenthood.
(Canal, 2015) The physicians describe all the contraptions very well on the
website, giving information about what they do to the body and the side
effects and risk factors that come with taking the medicine or having the
procedure.
The biggest service provided by Planned Parenthood are their sexual
transmitted disease screenings. The screening test for about fourteen
different types of sexual transmitted disease, which include chlamydia,
gonorrhea, HIV and AIDS, and human papillomavirus. They also look for
public lice and pelvic inflammatory disease. (Planned Parenthood Federation
of America Inc, 2014) Sexual transmitted disease screenings make up 42% of
the services that Planned Parenthood provides. According to Emily Canal
there were nearly 400,000 pap tests done in the year of 2013 (Canal, 2015).

Also in 2013 Planned Parenthood provided 4.5 million test for sexually
transmitted illnesses and treatments. (Topulos, Greene, Drazen, 2015)
Planned Parenthood also has many other services they provide to the
public for example, they have professional to talk to patients about safe sex
and abusive relationships. They talk about body image and help people
expect their own bodies or help them achieve the body they want by giving
them a healthy way to lose or gain weight with a nutritious diet and exercise.
They also help women with their pregnancies, they talk with them about any
concerns. They give the woman the right to choose if they want to keep the
baby or not, and give them all their choices. Their choices would include
giving the baby up for adoption, abortion, or help them with all the needs if
they would want to keep the baby. They provide the information needed for
the women to make the right choice for themselves and they provide support
for the choice they make. They also give them the information they need
such as things they cant eat while pregnant, what to expect, prenatal
vitamins and they answer any questions that they may have may have.
(Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc, 2014) These services make
up 11% of what Planned Parent provides. (Canal, 2015)
Abortion is another service that they provide. They provide two types
of abortion at their clinics, one is in-clinic abortion procedure and the other is

the abortion pill. Both of these are well explained on their website with what
happens during the procedure. For the in-clinic abortion the side effects of it
and any complications that could happen. For the abortion pill it also tells the
side effects, complications and what happens to your body and the fetus
when you take the pill. In all states of the United States at least one parent
of a teen under 18 years old has to have a consent to have an abortion.
Planned Parenthood has this information on their website with each of the
fifth states laws about it and enforces it at every Planned Parenthood clinic.
(Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc, 2014) Abortions make up 3%
of the services provided by them. (Canal, 2015) Abortion is one the concerns
that drive the pro-life, pro-choice war that is going on in the United States.
The pro-life activist views Planned Parenthood as an abortion clinic
while disregarding the services provided by Planned Parenthood. They have
been pushing for the Planned Parenthood to be defunded; the main purpose
they want to defund Planned Parenthood is to limit the number of abortion
clinics in the United States. One of the tools they used to try and get the
clinics shut down was a video they developed featuring the senior physician
from the Planned Parenthood Federation of America discussing the process of
harvesting fetal organs from aborted fetus for research and accusing her of
illegally profiting off of it. (Wadman, 2015) Planned Parenthood doesnt profit
off fetal tissue research, they only provide the companies with the aborted

fetus. This video had the Republican Senate wanting to defund Planned
Parenthood, even though fetal tissue research is legal in the United States.
David Daleiden accused Planned Parenthood of altering its abortion
procedure to acquire intact fetuses. He states that Planned Parenthood is a
criminal organization form from top down and should be immediately
stripped of taxpayer funding. (Devi, 2015) The pro-life activist have been
going on this video to get Planned Parenthood defunded but George Topulos,
Michael Greene, and Jeffery Drazen (2015), stated that the pro-life activist
campaign is of misinformation about the retrieval of fetal tissue used in
research and therapy is an excuse. When women have made the decision to
terminate a pregnancy, Planned Parenthood allows them the opportunity to
have the fetal tissue that would otherwise be discarded be used by qualified
researchers to help answer important medical questions. Planned
Parenthood is not illegally selling aborted fetus for research according to
(Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc, 2014); they follow all the
laws and guidelines for fetal tissue research.
The Republicans wanted to defund Planned Parenthood of almost three
billion dollars. But on December 3, 2015, the Republican Senates failed to
pass the bill to defund them. (Fram, 2015) President Obama has said that he
wouldnt allow for Planned Parenthood to be defunded, that he would veto
the bill if it came to him. (Wadman, 2015). Texas is one state out of our fifth
states that stopped funding abortion providers like Planned Parenthood in
2012. (Devi, 2015) Doing this dropped the amount of abortion in Texas for

the year of 2013 but the number of patients served by the states healthcare centers dropped, implying some women might have missed out on
family planning services and screening (Devi, 2015). According to Sharmila
Devi, (2015) in a poll 54% supported federal funding of Planned Parenthood
and 26% opposed it due to the new knowledge that the video was edited by
a group that had a relationship with the organization and individuals that
have been attacking abortion clinics and threatening physical safety of the
doctors that provide the abortions. Since the video was claimed to be fail the
pro-life activist dont have anything to use against Planned Parenthood other
than they do abortions at their clinics.
Planned Parenthood is a clinic for low income and young women. The
services they provide help millions of women, men, and teens a year. With
the Republicans trying to defund Planned Parenthood it would leave many
men, women, and teens without a place they can afford to go for their health
care needs. This isnt good for women and men that are in search of health
care, in all ways. In 2013, Planned Parenthood provided services to 2.7
million women, men, and young people and at least 60% of these patients
benefited from public health coverage programs such as the nations familyplanning program and Medicaid. At least 78% of these patients lived with
incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty levels (Topulos, Greene,
Drazen, 2015). Planned Parenthood is more than an abortion clinic, they

have provided millions of women, men, and teens with medical and nonmedical services. Planned Parenthood provides many services to the public
and whether youre pro-life or pro-choice, everyone should be informed of all
this information so they can have the knowledge to make the decision
whether they think that Planned Parenthood should be defunded or not.
