sectionofprivategroundandBLMproperty.Thedomainofthefunctionwas0to20miles,since
makingarightanglefromtherigtotherefinerymadea20miledifference.Theseweretwo
extremevalues.Theotherwasfoundusingthedifferentialequationtofindwherethederivative
equaled0,itdidexistonallintervalssothatwasntneededtobefound.Thiscameouttobe
x=+15/4andx=15/4.15/4mileswasnotinthedomainhoweverandwasignored.At15/4the
functionhadalocalminimum.Thismeansifyourunthepipelineforx=3.75,thepipewouldrun
6.25milesacrossprivategroundatanangleof36.9degrees.Theremaining16.25mileswould
beonBLMgroundgoingeasttotherefinery,bringingyourtotalto$8,000,000andthemost
efficientrouteforthepipeline.

Calculusformehasbeenaverybeneficialclasstofurtherextendmyknowledgein
mathematicsaswellasmycareergoals.Iplanongoingintomechanicalengineeringwhich
needsalotofmath.Calculushasbeenabletoshowmehowusingmathwillhelpmesolvereal
worldproblemsImayfaceintheprocessofdesignandfabrication.Iknowthisisavery
simplifiedversionorarealworldscenariobutitissointerestingtometobeabletofigureout
thesethingsbyusingalittlebitofmath.Ithinkcalculusisaveryusefultoolforitseffectiveness
insolvingtheseproblemsImayface.IthasshownmehowwhatIhavelearnedarejustdoors
thatwillopenupintoafurtherworldofmathematics.Sincemechanicalengineeringisfairly
broad(frommicrochipstospaceshuttles)thereisnoendtohowbeneficialcalculuscanbeto
me.IwillbeabletoapplytheknowledgeIhavelearnedinCalculus1tofurthermyeducational
goalsandonedaybecomeanengineerlikeIhavealwaysdreamedabout.
