Competency 001
The principal knows how to shape campus culture by
facilitating the development, articulation,
implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning
that is shared and supported by the school community.

By participating in CAT team and Restorative Discipline team

meetings, I have gained a larger appreciation for the
planning and collaboration that must occur in order to propel
the schools vision forward. I have worked alongside other
team members and representatives of the administrative
team in order to create, work out logistics, and implement
several school programs and initiatives this year.

Competency 002
The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate
with all members of the
school community, responds to diverse interests and
needs, and mobilizes resources to promote student
success.
As a member of the Campus Advisory Team we are in close
contact with stakeholders from within the building and
without. The administrative team and teachers along with
parents and business leaders come together and discuss
ways to improve teaching and learning, to promote the
positive achievements of students and staff, and to create a
plan of action to address any immediate needs of the school
community. Being a part of this team has increased my
awareness of campus activities and help to foster
relationships with members of the school community beyond

Competency 003
The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness,
and in an ethical and legal manner.
Shadowing my mentor, a grade level assistant principal, has
given me the opportunity to witness the meting out of justice
firsthand. In her interactions with students and teachers alike,
my mentor has shown herself to be fair and ethical by always
hearing both sides of any given issue and opting for the
appropriate consequence rather than a blanket one-size-fits all
punishment. Her knowledge of the legal ramifications to the
infraction, as well as that of her assigned consequence, has
illustrated to me the need to practice sound, legal and ethical
justice when it comes to the disciplinary side of handling
student and teacher issues.

Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and
implementation of curricula and strategic plans that enhance
teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum,
instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use
of varied assessments to measure student performance.
As a member of the district level curriculum writing
team in charge of the nascent Katy Virtual School this
year I have been an integral part of shaping the future
of content delivery in my district. The team has created
original curricula for online courses that will be the
focus of future implementation of this model.

Competency 005
The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and
sustain an instructional program and a campus culture
that are conducive to student learning and staff
professional growth.
By shadowing my mentor, I have conducted several
mock walkthroughs wherein I observed teachers at
work and made recommendations for a better
instructional environment. While my observations and
recommendations were not binding, the process served
as an excellent practice for when I will perform actual
walkthroughs in the future. The training I received
through USTs PDAS training sessions also prepared me
for this process.

Competency 006
The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation
and development system to improve the performance of
all staff members, select and implement appropriate
models for supervision and staff development, and apply
the legal requirements for personnel management.
I have conducted several staff developments this school
year as part of my membership on the Restorative
Discipline team. I attended a specialized training in San
Antonio in order to better facilitate the professional
development sessions. I ran a generic staff
development for a large group introducing them to the
basic tenets of restorative discipline and then I ran
more specific staff development in departmental PLCs
that went deeper into the model and covered topics

Competency 007
The principal knows how to apply organizational,
decision-making, and problem solving skills to ensure an
effective learning environment.

As team lead for English IV, I have had to lead my group

through various instances of decision-making and
problem-solving scenarios this year. From assessment
decisions to structuring meetings to mediate disputes
between colleagues, I have led the team through
difficult times to become a more cohesive, working unit.

Competency 008
The principal knows how to apply principles of effective
leadership and management in relation to campus
budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial
management, and technology use.

In order to better acquaint myself with the financial

aspects of resource allocation and management, I sat
down with the school financial clerk on several
occasions and she led me through the finer points of
the processes. The topics included staffing, campusbased budgeting, classroom technology management,
purchasing, and the campus retrofit process as a whole.

Competency 009
The principal knows how to apply principles of
leadership and management to the campus
physical plant and support systems to ensure a
safe and effective learning environment.
I have taken the lead during several school based
activities this year. From being the administrator on
duty during soccer games, school plays, and the
National English Honor Society induction ceremony to
simply being a monitor during lunch and make up final
exam testing, I have had many opportunities to oversee
student safety and monitor the school environment to
ensure that there was an atmosphere conducive to
learning.
