URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR
SPRING 2016

SERVICE LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONTRACT DRAFT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Gallup strengths in an organizational/interpersonal
setting that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities
of URIs Center for Student Leadership Development.
Activity: The activity I did for my learning contract was to participate in the URI Shadow
Day 2016.
Evidence: The evidence of my completion for URI Shadow Day includes the Dos and
Dont sheet for the tour and an email from the project leader.
Detailed Activity:
To complete my learning contract I applied to a URI Shadow Day volunteer. I
love younger kids so I figured this was a great idea for my learning contract. Park View
Middle School, from Cranston, Rhode Island, had about 40 students come to URI for this
experience. It was a great opportunity to get children looking into the future and to help
them gain an insight to college life and academics. When I first arrived I received a name
tag and then we immediately split into forty students up into four groups with two student
leaders in each group. My group consisted of ten students from very diverse backgrounds
which I loved. The day consisted of three parts: a tour, lunch, and a closing activity. I had
an exam at 11am, so I was only able to give an hour tour to the students. However, I got
to know the group well within a short period of time. My partner and I asked them
questions to keep the conversation flowing and get them to open up to us. My strength of
woo really showed throughout the tour; I was funny and excited, which helped the
students open up as well. My strength of responsibility showed throughout my
experience because I had to keep count of the kids considering they were under my
watch. I had to use my other strength, strategic because I had to plan out the tour, the
route, and what we were going to discuss. Lastly, I am an achiever, and I had a personal
goal for myself during my experience. I wanted to get the students as engaged and
interested in the university within a short period of time. Being in seventh grade, it can be
hard to understand the idea of college. I related many things on campus to middle school
life and I would constantly ask questions they could answer. For example, I asked Who
likes Fetty Wap or Kevin Hart? This led to a discussion about events on campus and the
SEC club. This is one of many examples.
Overall, I enjoyed begun able to put my strengths to use doing something I love
which is interacting with people. I really hope I can get the tour guide position next year
because I can utilize my strengths and also gain more knowledge about the university,

others, and myself. My opportunity connects with the mission, vision, and values of the
Center of Student Leadership Development. They take pride in providing developmental
opportunities for all students to become informed, inclusive, effective, and ethical leaders
in the global marketplace through the implementation of learner-centered academic,
experiential, and co-curricular programming.
