Title of Practice Activity: Occupational Therapy Practice Models

Practice Activity 1: Students will work through a series of clicker
questions to identify models and to apply them to case scenarios.
Practice Activity 2: Students will watch two case scenarios in video
format and will select the practice model that best applies. Students
will explain how/why the practice model applies in writing on
worksheets.

Rationale for choosing the teaching method/learning activities.

Students are given opportunities to read, watch and analyze the various
practice models that apply with a variety of clients and case scenarios.
This will allow the students to apply the abstract concepts of these
models to real-life practice scencarios.
Why did you choose the content and practice learning
activities?
These practice activities were selected because they offer an
opportunity to apply the models to situations that simulate the practice
context, rather than simply explaining or identifying these models and
their components.
Ho w is this evaluated:
This will be evaluated by their ability to select a client from their
placement, to identify the diagnosis, personal, environmental and
occupational factors and to select and apply the most appropriate
theoretical model to the real case scenario.

Why did I choose this evaluation method?

The content, practice activities and evaluation are all in the same
learning domain and at the same level.
Students will apply the same models to a variety of client populations,
diagnoses and ages. Students will have the opportunity to practice
selecting these models based on a variety of client cases, which is
formative for their final evaluation of applying an appropriate model to
real practice situation.

Title of Content Activity: Learning and teaching ADL skills

Teaching & Learning of Content Method 1: Powerpoint and lecture
with demonstration on types of learning and teaching methods
employed in occupational therapy practice to enhance and optimize
ADL skills and independence.

Include content activities

and practice activities
Include 2 to 3 content
activities and align to
practice activities

Teaching & Learning of Content Method 2: Students watch a

variety of videos that demonstrate the common techniques used in ADL
training and critique what methods were effective and what methods
were ineffective.

Title of Practice Activity: Learning and teaching ADL skills

Practice Activity 1: Practice with a partner completing an ADL
program to teach someone how to independently dress their lower
extremities after a hip replacement using appropriate equipment and
strategies. Students provide one another with feedback.
Practice Activity 2: Practice with a partner completing an ADL
program to teach someone how to independently dress their upper
extremities after a cerebral vascular accident using appropriate
equipment and strategies. Students provide one another with feedback.

content and practice
learning activities?

Rationale for choosing the teaching method/learning activities.

Students are given opportunities to hear, observe and apply practically
the common teaching methods used in ADL training through these
content activities. This allows students to utilize this information in a
higher level (apply) versus simply recognizing or naming the
teaching/learning methods.
Rationale for choosing the practice learning activities
Students further develop these skills by having the opportunity to
practice these skills and by evaluating one another and through practice
opportunities. This simulates the practice environment, where they will
be applying this information and knowledge.

This will be evaluated by a practical evaluation that is authentic to the
practice environment. Students will be given a case (of the two
practiced) and will be required to teach ADL training skills to a client by
employing the correct techniques and strategies taught through the
content activities and practiced through the formative evaluations.

client cases and will be required demonstrate their knowledge of the
content activities and will utilize the practice activities to master the
skills required for this evaluation.

Title of Evaluation: Occupational Therapy Practice Model Case
Application
Students will apply occupational therapy practice models to a variety of
case scenarios (written case studies). Students will be required to
identify client factors such as diagnosis, age, prognosis, goals and
other personal factors, to organize this information systematically, to
select an appropriate model of practice and to demonstrate application
of that model in determining a treatment approach.

Students will complete an ADL teaching and training program for a
mock client which includes introducing themselves and their role,
obtaining consent, ensuring privacy, explaining the training, providing
appropriate types of feedback in accordance with the training technique
and client level of communication and understanding and providing the
client with appropriate closure following the treatment session. Students

and functioning in a way that is effective (clear, concise and correct).
Students will be required to demonstrate appropriate non-verbal (visual)
communication in order to provide effective demonstrations and to
respond to and give appropriate feedback. Students are also required

to demonstrate written communication skills through appropriate

treatment/charting documentation following the treatment
