Section1:Someofthemostbeautifulpoolsoftheshorearenotexposedtotheviewofthecasual
passerby.Theymustbesearchedforperhapsinlowlyingbasinshiddenbygreatrocksthat
seemtobeheapedindisorderandconfusion,perhapsindarkenedrecessesunderaprojecting
ledge,perhapsbehindathickcurtainofconcealingweeds.
Section2:Iknowsuchahiddenpool.Itliesinaseacave,atlowtidefillingperhapsthelowerthird
ofitschamber.Asthefloodingtidereturns,thepoolgrows,swellinginvolumeuntilallthecaveis
waterfilledandthecaveandtherocksthatformandcontainitaredrownedbeneaththefullnessof
thetide.Whenthetideislow,however,thecavemaybeapproachedfromthelandwardside.
Massiverocksformitsfloorandwallsandroof.Theyarepenetratedbyonlyafewopeningstwo
nearthefloorontheseasideandonehighonthelandwardwall.Hereonemaylieontherocky
thresholdandpeerthroughthelowentranceintothecaveanddownintoitspool.
Section3:Lookingdownintothesmallworldconfinedwithinthewallsofthecave,onefeelsthe
rhythmsofthegreaterseaworldbeyond.Thewatersofthepoolareneverstill.Theirlevelchanges
notonlygraduallywiththeriseandfallofthetidebutalsoabruptlywiththepulseofthesurf.Asthe
backwashofawavedrawsitseaward,thewaterfallsawayrapidlythenwithasuddenreversal,
theinrushingwaterfoamsandsurgesupwardalmosttoone'sface.
Section4:AsIlieandlookintothepool,therearemomentsofrelativequietintheintervalswhen
onewavehasrecededandthenexthasnotyetentered.ThenIcanhearthesmallsounds:the
soundofwaterdrippingfromthemusselsontheceilingorofwaterdrippingfromseaweedsthat
linethewallssmall,silversplasheslosingthemselvesinthevastnessofthepoolandinthe
confused,murmurouswhisperingsthatemanatefromthepoolitselfthepoolthatisneverquite
still.
Section5:Thenasmyfingersexploreamongthedarkredthongsofthedulse*andpushawaythe
frondsoftheIrishmossthatcoverthewallsbeneathme,Ibegintofindcreaturesofsuchextreme
delicacythatIwonderhowtheycanexistinthiscavewhenthebruteforceofstormsurfis
unleashedwithinitsconfinedspace.
Section6:Adheringtotherockwallsarethincrustsofoneofthebryozoans,aforminwhich
hundredsofminute,flaskshapedcellsofabrittlestructure,fragileasglass,lieoneagainstanother
inregularrowstoformacontinuouscrust.Thecolorisapaleapricotthewholeseemsan
ephemeralcreationthatwouldcrumbleawayatatouch,ashoarfrost*beforethesun.
Section7:Exploringwithmylens,Ifindmanyverysmallsnailsinthefrondsofseaweed.Oneof
themhasobviouslynotbeenlongintheworld,foritspurewhiteshellhasformedonlythefirstturn
ofthespiralthatwillturnmanytimesuponitselfingrowthfrominfancytomaturity.
Section8:Butseeminglymostfragileofallarethelittlecalcareous*spongesthathereandthere
existamongtheseaweeds.Theyformmassesofminute,upthrusttubesofvaselikeform,none
morethanhalfaninchhigh.Thewallofeachisameshoffinethreadsawebofstarchedlace
madetofairyscale.
Section9:Icouldhavecrushedanyofthesefragilestructuresbetweenmyfingersyetsomehow
theyfinditpossibletoexisthere,amidthesurgingthunderofthesurfthatmustfillthiscaveasthe
seacomesin.Perhapstheseaweedsarethekeytothemystery,theirresilientfrondsasufficient
cushionforalltheminuteanddelicatebeingstheycontain.
Section10:Butitisthespongesthatgivetothecaveanditspooltheirspecialqualitythesense
ofacontinuingflowoftime.ForeachdaythatIvisitthepoolonthelowesttidesofthesummer,
theyseemunchangedthesameinJuly,thesameinAugust,thesameinSeptember.Andthey
arethesamethisyearaslast,andpresumablyastheywillbeahundredorathousandsummers
hence.
Section11:Simpleinstructure,littledifferentfromthefirstspongesthatspreadtheirmatson
ancientrocksanddrewtheirfoodfromaprimordialsea,thespongesbridgetheeonsoftime.
