Unit Title: Discovering Volume

Name: Silvia Cervantes-Lopez

Content Area: Geometry- Volume

Grade Level: 9th Grade

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

1. Give an informal argument for the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone.
3. Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

be able to identify and use the following terms: volume, prisms, pyramids, cylinder, cones and spheres.
be able to find the volume of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres.
be able to use the volume formulas to solve problems.
also be able to determine how changes in dimension affect the volume of a shape.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, we will be covering volume. This unit consists of three different lessons, the first will be on prisms and cubes, the second will be on
pyramids and cylinders and the last lesson will be on cones and spheres. Students will be assigned distinct assignments that will help them
comprehend and apply the material that is being taught in their daily life. Each lesson will have a different assignment, the first lesson is a
presentation with a sheet of guided notes. The second lesson is an activity that is based on computing the volume of a can soda and on the last
lesson you will need to create a graphic organizer. These assignments will help the students learn and identify important terms such as, volume,
prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, and sphere. Students will also be able to learn and apply the volume formulas in real life situation problem and
determine how changes in dimension affect the volume of a shape.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
As an entry-level assessment, students will
need to take a survey to check how much they
remember from two dimensional shapes. In
the survey there will be questions that relate
to area.

Formative:
As a formative assessment, students will need
to create flash cards for each shape that we
have covered. In the flash card, students will
need to include the volume formula, a picture
of the 3 dimensional figure, and an example.
They will also need to do an online quiz that
consists of 6 questions. The quiz will be
covering the first two lessons. Students will

Summative:
As a summative assessment students will be
taking a 15 question test. They will also be
assigned to do a project. In this project
students will need to select an object from
home and replicate it.

also need to do an activity. This activity

consists in creating two problems, where one
needs to be an application problem. Once
they have finished, they will need to trade with
4 of their classmates and solve their peers
problems. Students will also need to do a
concept map that shows their understanding
of the material.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:

Students will be
able to record
and measure
volume.

Students will be
able to use the
correct units and
procedures to
calculate
volume.

Students will be
using 1-inch
cubes to
calculate
volume.
Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
Students will be given a
worksheet (guided
notes) with questions
regarding volume. Also,
throughout the
presentation, the
students will need to
work on some practice
problems.
In addition, I will be
asking them question
throughout the
presentation.

Lesson Activities:

Student Learning
Objective:

Students will be
able to find the
volume of
cylinders and
pyramids.

Students will be
able to solve
problems using

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will be
assessed by doing the
activity. The students will
be assigned to compute
the volume of a can and
they will also need to
create two different
volume problems, one
for the volume of a
cylinder and the other

Lesson Activities:

This lesson will consists of a presentation on cubes and triangular prisms. The
presentation will provide students with the necessary material to learn the volume of
these 3 dimensional figures. Within the presentation students will be see examples and
videos to them learn the material. Furthermore, students will be given a sheet of guided
notes. Students will need to watch the presentation in order to answer every question.

For this lesson, students will need to work on an activity. This activity consists of four
different parts. First, students will need to define key terms. Students will be able to use
the links to help them answer the questions. In the second part, students will need to
calculate the volume of a can soda twice. To begin, they will need to estimate the
dimensions of the can by measuring it with a ruler. Then they will be provided with the
dimensions of the can, so they will only need to calculate the volume. Next, students will
need to compare both volumes and answer the follow up questions. In part three, students
will need to create two real life situation volume problems, one for a cylinder and one for a
pyramid. In addition to creating the problems, students will also need to solve each of
them. To end this activity you will need to answer the two reflection questions.

one for the volume of the

pyramid, these problems
will also need to be
solved by the students.

All the work will be due at the end of class. Good Luck!

Acceptable Evidence:
To assess the students
understanding, students
will need to create at
least 4 problems, two for
each figure (one needs to
be an application). They
will also need to solve
the problems and include
them in the graphic
organizer.

Lesson Activities:

Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective:

Students will be
able to find the
volume of cones
and spheres.

Students will be
able to use the
volume formulas
to solve
problems.

Students will need to create a concept map for the last two 3 dimensional figures in this
unit, cones and sphere. In the concept map, students will need to include the volume
formulas of the figures, at least 3 images that relate to the topic, a video on each figure
and at least 2 examples for each figure (make sure one example is an application
problem). Students are welcomed to include any extra information that helps you
comprehend the material.
To complete this assignment, students will need to visit the following site. Here, students
will be able to obtain information about the two 3 dimensional figures. These videos will
help the students understand and apply the formulas.
